Outstanding U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1816 Type III Flintlock
Musket Dated 1837 - Serial no. L18, 69 cal., 42 inch round bbl.,
bright finish, walnut stock. This outstanding example is one of
approximately 8,200 Model 1816 muskets manufactured at Harpers
Ferry in the year 1837, according to figures listed on page 426 of “American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume
II” by George D. Moller, with the Model 1816 Type III muskets described on pages 424-425. Model 1816 muskets were primarily used in conflicts
with various Native American groups after the War of 1812 and were also used into the Mexican-American War era and the Civil War, with this exceptional example
displaying minimal evidence of use. With the majority of these Model 1816 muskets receiving various alterations to percussion and many rifled, this example
appears to remain in its original flintlock configuration with its original smooth bore. The lock is marked “HARPERS/FERRY/1837” vertically behind the hammer with
the federal eagle and shield motif above “US” at the center. “1837” dated barrel tang. Serial number “L/18” marked on top of the breech, with “V/P/(eagle head)”
proofs on the upper left. “AR/V” ahead of “V/J.A.S” (John A. Schaeffer) inspection initials stamped on the left stock flat. “WBY.” inspection initials marked behind the
lower tang. “US” marked top of the buttplate. Single digit assembly number “3” marked on various components.
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine, exhibiting untouched original armory bright iron surfaces with areas of brown freckling, attractive golden aged patina on the flash
pan, and absolutely sharp markings and edges in the metal overall. Stock is excellent, with attractive original raised grain and rich oil finish, a few light handling
marks, distinct edges, and very crisp stampings. Mechanically excellent. This outstanding U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1816 musket would be extremely difficult to
improve upon, and is a must have for the advanced U.S. martial arms collector!
Estimate: 9,500 - 14,000
