Scarce Documented U.S. Springfield Model 1851 Cadet Musket
with Bayonet - NSN, 57 cal., 40 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. These Model 1851 Cadet
muskets are described in depth on pages 243-247 of George D. Moller’s book “American Military Shoulder Arms,
Volume III”, with this exact musket photographed on page 244 and 245. Springfield Armory manufactured
a total of 4,000 cadet muskets c. 1852-1853 for use by various cadet schools around the country. They
feature the same lock as the Model 1847 Musketoon. It has a small bayonet stud on the bottom of the
barrel near the muzzle, a blade front sight on the front of the upper barrel band, “1852” dated lock and
barrel tang. A diamond shaped brass plaque marked “49” is affixed on top of the wrist. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials
marked at the toe of the stock. Includes a U.S. socket bayonet, and “OHIO” marked leather sling.
CONDITION: Fine, with bright surfaces with some light dings, very light flash pitting, and crisp markings. Stock is fine with
scattered light dents and scratches and a chip ahead of the lock. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is excellent.

Documented U.S. Springfield Model
1863 Type I Percussion Rifle-Musket
with Bayonet - NSN, 58 cal., 40 inch
round bbl., bright/blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Reportedly 273,265 Springfield Model 1863
Type I rifle-muskets were manufactured c. 1863-1864 with the screw fastened barrel bands. Springfield Model
1863 rifle-muskets are described on pages 324-327 of George D. Moller’s book “American Military Shoulder Arms Volume
III”, with this exact rifle photographed on page 324. These rifles are significant in the history of U.S. martial arms, as they
armed Union troops and saw widespread use in the latter years of the Civil War. Solid blade front and 500 yard two-leaf
rear sight. Casehardened 1863 dated “U.S./SPRINGFIELD” marked lock. Armory bright 1863 dated barrel, ramrod, and “US”
marked buttplate. Blued bands, rear sight, trigger, and trigger guard. The left stock flat is marked with two circled script
cartouches including “ESA” (Erskine S. Allin). “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock.
Includes a U.S. socket bayonet and leather sling.
CONDITION: Very fine, bright polish with some scattered light freckling and dulling, 85% bright original blue finish on
barrel bands and trigger guard with some patches of light pitting, and 75% plus vivid original case colors on the lock.
Stock is excellent with defined edges, some scratches and dents, and crisp cartouches. Mechanically excellent. Included
bayonet is very fine with some scattered patches of light pitting.

Documented Whitney Pattern 1853 Enfield Type Percussion Rifle-
Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 58 cal., 40 inch round bbl., bright finish,
walnut stock. Whitney manufactured around 3,500 of these rifle-muskets around 1859-1862.
At least 2,000 were purchased by Maryland and primarily captured by Confederate sympathizers during the
Baltimore riots, and Georgia received between 1,225 and 1,700 of them before the outbreak of the Civil War.
It has a bayonet stud/blade front sight, Whitney’s long-range rear sight, “E. WHITNEY” marked lock, brass
trigger guard bow, iron trigger guard strap, and boxed “SR” over “15” stamped on the left stock flat. Includes
a leather sling and socket bayonet. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the
stock. This exact rifle-musket is pictured on pages 473 and 474 and the model is discussed on pages 472-
476 in George D. Moller’s “American Military Shoulder Arms, Vol. III.”
CONDITION: Very good with a brown-gray patina, some scattered patches of minor pitting and a series of
dings towards the muzzle. The wood is fine with a chip at the upper tang and minor dings and scratches.
Mechanically excellent.
