Excellent U.S. Navy Contract
Remington Jenks “Mule Ear” Breech Loading Percussion Carbine with Maynard Patent Tape Primer Device - Serial no. 132,
54 cal., 24 1/4 inch round bbl., brown/casehardened finish, walnut stock. E. Remington & Sons purchased machinery and a U.S. Navy
contract for 1,000 Jenks carbines with Maynard tape primers from Ames Manufacturing Company and manufactured these carbines c.
1847-1848, per “Flayderman’s Guide” (9th Edition, 9B-063). The Jenks is unique in that it is the only side hammer weapon officially used
by the U.S. military. A distinguishing feature of the Remington Jenks is the Maynard tape primer on the lock plate. Marked
“REMINGTON’S/HERKIMER/N.Y.” on the lock, “W JENKS” parallel to the bore on the barrel at the breech followed by “U.S.N./
RP/P/1847/CAST-STEEL” perpendicular to the bore ahead of the oval loading port, “1/32” on the underside of the breech lever,
“204” underneath the tape primer cover, and some small “P” marks on a few of the components. The oval loading opening
found on many of these carbines was an alteration of the earlier round opening and was designed to facilitate the use of
paper cartridge rather than loose balls and powder. The bore was also rifled at this time. Bordered script “RP” (Richard Paine)
inspection cartouche stamped on the left of the stock opposite the lock. Other features include the integral blade front sight
on the foremost of the two brass barrel bands, an integral notch sight on the top of the lever, brass trigger guard with saddle
ring, and brass buttplate. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock.
CONDITION: Excellent, retains 95% plus original brown finish with some light scratches. Retains 85% attractive original case colors. The brass retains an original
bright patina. The stock is also excellent with attractive original raised wood grain, defined edges, some light scratches and dents, and a crisp cartouche.
Mechanically excellent. An excellent example of a scarce Remington Navy Jenks carbine that would make a fine addition to any U.S. martial collection!
Provenance: The George Moller Collection; Property of a Gentleman.

LOT 228
Desirable U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1855 Percussion Pistol-Carbine with Shoulder
Stock - NSN, 58 cal., 12 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This Model 1855 pistol-
carbine was manufactured by Springfield Armory in 1855. Springfield Armory manufactured
4,021 of the unique Model 1855 Pistol-Carbines between 1855 and 1857, per “Flayderman’s
Guide” (9th Edition, 6A-051, 6A-052). The pistol features an attachable walnut buttstock with brass yoke and
buttplate. The buttstock allows the pistol to be used as a carbine with the stock attached or a pistol with the stock removed. The pistol has a round barrel
with a faceted breech. The barrel has a two-leaf rear sight graduated to 400 yards and a blade type front sight with wide base. A steel ramrod with concave
tip is mounted on a swivel beneath the barrel. The flat, bevel-edged lock plate is fitted with a Maynard tape primer and the nipple bolster has a clean-out screw. The pistol
has a walnut stock with brass tip, and brass barrel band, trigger guard and buttcap. Sling swivels are mounted on the barrel band and stock and a lanyard ring is mounted
on the buttcap. The lock plate is roll-stamped “U.S./SPRINGFIELD” ahead of the primer door and dated “1855” behind the hammer. The eagle and shield motif is stamped on
the primer door. The upper tang is dated “1855”. The left barrel flat is stamped with “V/P/eagle head” proof and inspection marks. The buttcap is stamped with the assembly
number “5” and the stock is stamped with the assembly number “7”. A faint, oval, Ordnance final inspection stamp is visible on the left stock wrist.
CONDITION: Very good. The barrel has been lightly cleaned, bored out, and has moderate-heavy flash pitting on the flats and bolster. The hammer, lock plate and primer magazine
door have a silver-gray patina with sharp markings. The tape primer is complete and functional. The barrel date and proofmarks are clear. The brass
furniture on the pistol stock and attachable stock has a good looking patina. The pistol stock and slightly loose fitting attachable stock are both in
very good condition. The lock plate mortise and barrel channel have sharp edges. There is a repaired diagonal hairline crack in the left stock flat,
and an area on the right side behind the hammer. Mechanically excellent. Nearly all of the Model 1855 pistol-carbines manufactured by Springfield
Armory were apparently issued and remained in service thru the first year of the Civil War. Virtually all Model 1855 pistol-carbines show moderate
to heavy service wear; this is a superior example of an important U.S. cavalry handgun.
