Gold Inlaid, Engraved, and Carved Parisian Flintlock Sporting Gun by Chasteau - NSN, 12 gauge, 41 3/4 inch part
octagon bbl., blue/gold/bright finish, walnut stock. Claude Chasteau was a gunmaker in Paris in the late 17th and early
18th century, and his son Francois-Alexander Chasteau is recorded as active in Paris in 1741–84. This gun was purchased
from W. Keith Neal by Norman R. Blank in February 1963 and may have been from the arms collection at Jagdschloss
Kranischstein. The blued, smoothbore barrel has a rounded silver blade front sight, long sighting flat signed “CHASTEAV
A PARIS” in gold scroll script, gold scrollwork and bands at the breech, and coordinating gold scrollwork on the tang. The
flat beveled lock is signed “CHASTEAV/A/PARIS” at the center below the faceted priming pan and is engraved with a stag,
bow and arrows, dog and fowl scene, scrollwork,
and wavy borders. The mounts are bright steel
and are engraved with hunting motifs. The
trigger guard features a chiseled foliate finial.
The full-length stock has molding and carving,
including a mask at the ramrod entry.
CONDITION: Fine with 60% original blue finish
and bright original gold on the barrel, some
thinning to smooth brown patina, minor
pitting towards the breech, mostly bright silver-gray patina on the lock and mounts, crisp engraving and
markings, and generally minor overall wear. The stock is also fine and has mostly distinct carving and molding, a few thin
cracks and repairs, and general mild dings and scratches. Mechanically functions.

Flintlock Single Barrel Shotgun by Duon of Nancy - NSN, 20 gauge, 34 3/8 inch part octagon bbl.,
blue/gold/bright finish, walnut stock. Duon of Nancy is listed as active around 1780-1790 in “Der Neue Stockel” by Heer. This fine sporting gun
features a fire blued smoothbore barrel with a band of gold at the muzzle, a rounded blade front sight, girdles at the transition point, gold bead borders on the
breech section, “DUON A NANCY CANON TORDU” in raised gilt lettering on top, and gold lined sunken maker’s marks at the breech consisting of three fleurs-de-lis
on the upper left and upper right and “crown/MI/DI” on top. The standing breech has a grooved rear sight. The lightly rounded lock is signed “DUON A NANCY” and
has light border engraving. The mounts are bright steel. The stock has relief carving and molding, a large cheekpiece with carved scroll accent, and a green velvet
cheek pad with silver trim, and 13 5/8 length of pull. The gun was acquired from W. Keith Neal in February 1962.
CONDITION: Fine with 80% plus original fire blue finish, most of the original gold, bright lock and mounts, some minor oxidation, and generally minor age and
storage related wear. The stock is also fine and has some dings and scratches, crisp carving, minor cracks at the toe, and a faded cheek pad. Mechanically excellent.
