Panel Scene Factory Engraved and Gold Inlaid German
Georg Knaak Gew 88 Bolt Action Rifle - Serial no. 711,
7.92x57mm cal., 29 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish,
walnut stock. Introduced in 1888, this rifle has a blade front
sight and an adjustable ladder rear sight on the blued barrel
which is marked with Birmingham proof marks on the left side
of the breech area. The barrel is fitted to the casehardened
action which shows German proof marks as well as “Gew. 88”
on the left side flanked by scroll engraving. The magazine is
panel scene engraved with a leopard scene on the left, a tiger on the
right, and a gold inlaid lion on the underside along with “GEORG KNAAK/
BERLIN” for the highly regarded firm. The rifle is fitted in a lightly figured,
likely original, stock with multi-point checkering at the wrist, a set of sling
swivels, and a smooth steel buttplate. Includes a cleaning rod.
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine, retaining 90% plus blue finish, 97% case
colors, minor handling evidence, some dings and scratches, and sharp
checkering on the very fine stock. Mechanically excellent.
