Large Engraved British Westley Richards 6 Bore Single Barrel Percussion Wildfowling
Sporting Shotgun - Serial no. 1322, 6 bore gauge, 41 1/2 inch round bbl., brown/casehardened/
blue finish, walnut stock. The browned Damascus barrel is signed
“WESTLEY RICHARDS 170 NEW BOND ST. LONDON” on top, with
“WESTLEY RICHARDS” on the lock. The Westley Richards firm was active
at their famous 170 New Bond Street location between 1829-1854,
according to translated information on page 1041 of “Der Neue Stockel,
Volume 2” by Heer, in which the book indicates William Bishop was involved between 1829-1846. This large shotgun is
of the type that would have been used for commercial seal hunting or large scale market
waterfowl hunting in England, Canada, or the United States. With the
advent of large scale muzzleloading weapons such as this
one, also referred to as punt guns, hunters could kill dozens of birds with a single blast. It measures at 58
inches in overall length, with a 41 1/2 inch barrel and an approximately .95 inch bore diameter measured
from the muzzle, indicating it is a 6 bore (aka 6 gauge). Bead front sight, engraving of a waterfowl on top
of the breech, scroll engraved upper tang with sighting groove, scroll engraved lock with scroll engraved
dolphin headed hammer, scroll engraved fittings, lower tang with engraved pineapple finial, and border engraving. “476/57” marked
on the left breech flat of the barrel, and “1322” on the lower tang. It is fitted with a full length stock with a checkered wrist, engraved
fittings, and a brass tipped wooden ram rod. Includes a canvas sleeve.
CONDITION: Very good, retains much of the period refurbished brown twist finish on the barrel, with smooth brown and gray patina on the casehardened lock and breech, 30% dull blue finish on the fittings, with sharp engraving.
Stock is also very good, with nice figure, a few professional repairs, light dents and scratches, and defined checkering. Mechanically excellent.
