Excellent
Winchester Model
1892 Lever Action
Rifle with Factory
Letter - Serial no.
178657, 38 WCF cal., 24
inch octagon bbl., blue
finish, walnut stock. This is
a rare example of a standard
Winchester Model 1892 rifle in .38
caliber in high condition. The included
factory letter states that this exceptional rifle’s serial number was applied on November
9, 1901, and indicates the rifle was in .38 caliber with an octagon barrel and plain trigger. It was received in the warehouse on December 28, 1901, and
shipped on July 10, 1902, in order 146586. The standard two-line address and “38” W.C.F.” are marked on the top barrel flat. The upper tang has the standard three-line
model/trademark/patent date marking, and the serial number is on the bottom of the receiver. The rifle is equipped with a dovetailed German silver blade front sight and
an elevation adjustable buckhorn rear sight and is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.
CONDITION: Excellent, retains 90% plus bright original high polish blue finish, 75% of the vivid original case colors, and 80% of the original nitre blue on the loading gate
with the balance a smooth grey patina and some mild freckling visible along the upper right edge of the receiver. The wood is also excellent with some minor storage dings
and scratches. Mechanically excellent. The Winchester Model 1892 paired well with a Colt Single Action Army in the same caliber and was popular with lawmen in the late
19th century and early 20th century and was frequently used in westerns. They are increasingly hard to acquire in excellent condition.
Provenance: The Wes Adams Collection; Private Collection.
