Fine Miquelet-Lock Escopeta by Francisco Antonio Garzya,
Madrid, Dated 1775 - NSN, 18 gauge, 33 1/4 inch part octagon
bbl., blue/gold/bright finish, walnut stock. This distinctive sporting
gun, dated 1775, was made by Royal Gunmaker Francisco Antonio
Garzya. The smoothbore, blued, part octagonal barrel has a blade
front sight, groove rear sight on a band with engraving finials and
gilt backgrounds, gold inlays, “FRANco. ANTo. GARZYA” (top) along
with “EN MADRYD” (upper left) and “Ao.DE MDCCLXXV.” (upper right)
in gold inlay, sunken gold lined maker’s marks including “FRANco./
ANTo./GRAZa” at the breech and Madrid’s “crown/MADR”, and gold
lined vent. The lock and trigger guard have the same maker’s mark,
and the lock is also signed “Ao DE 1775/FRANco. ANTo. GARZIA MAD.”
The lock, barrel tang, and mounts are scroll engraved and have gilt
backgrounds. The distinctive Madrid-style fluted butt has foliate and
shell carving. The gun was acquired by Norman R. Blank from Charles
Marchal, Paris, in 1970.
CONDITION: Fine as professionally restored with nearly all of the gold
and blue finish remaining, minimal wear aside from some pitting by
the vent, upper barrel band absent, crisp carving and engraving, and
some light dings and scratches in the stock. Mechanically functions.
