Smith & Wesson Model No. 1 1/2 Second Issue Spur Trigger Revolver with Desirable
Police Sergeant Inscription - Serial no. 39062, 32 RF cal., 3 1/2 inch solid rib bbl., nickel finish, rosewood
grips. Manufactured from 1868 to 1875, this is a very fine example of a Smith & Wesson No. 1 1/2 Second
Issue revolver with an inscription to a police sergeant. The back strap has the period inscription “Presented
to SERGt. F.J. Griffith by No. 2 Squad 3rd Dist. Police.” The identity of sergeant Griffith remains unknown at the
time of writing. Revolvers such as these would have been a popular pocket firearm for police and civilians
alike in the crime-rife streets of the sprawling metropolitan centers of the late 19th century. The standard one-
line address is marked on top of the barrel rib. The matching serial number is on the butt and stamped inside
the right grip panel. The matching assembly marking “LL4” is marked on the right of the grip frame, rear face
of the cylinder, and rear face of the barrel lug. It is fitted with a German silver blade front sight, notch
rear sight on top of the cylinder latch, and a pair of smooth rosewood grips.
CONDITION: Very fine, retains 90% of the untouched, original nickel finish with a few scattered
patches of light flaking and pitting, and the inscription remains crisp. The grips are fine with a
stabilized vertical crack in each panel and otherwise minor handling evidence. Mechanically
excellent. A desirable Smith & Wesson No. 1 1/2 revolver inscribed to the police sergeant who earned
the respect of his department!
