The included factory letter lists this beautiful revolver in the classic “Frontier
Six Shooter” caliber .44-40 and indicates it had a 5 1/2 inch barrel and “soft”
finish when shipped to Hartley & Graham in New York City on March 19, 1883.
The revolver displays exceptional engraving consisting of extensive scrollwork
with beaded backgrounds, areas of entwining scrolls, various border designs,
gadrooning along the sides of the top strap groove, a wavy line in the groove,
and more. The engraving is from the shop of legendary Master Engraver L. D.
Nimschke, who engraved many of the fine arms sold by Hartley & Graham in
the late 19th century. It is fitted with a stunning pair of smooth pearl grips. The
barrel has the one-line address on top and the small “44” caliber marking on the
underside. The frame has the three-line patent marking on the left. Matching
serial numbers are on the frame, trigger guard, and back strap.
CONDITION: Excellent with 95% of the original nickel finish remaining and
displaying minor age and storage related wear, including some very minor
areas of flaking and slight pitting, and around 75% of the bright blue finish
on the back of the hammer as well as on the screws and trigger. The grips are
also excellent with lots of iridescent colors. Mechanically excellent. This Colt
Single Action Army revolver is a spectacular example of 19th century Nimschke
craftsmanship in outstanding condition.
Provenance: The Nick Shannon Collection.
