Spectacular Terence A. Smith Signed, Civil War Theme,
Master Panel Scene Engraved Deluxe Long Range Creedmoor
Pattern No. 1 Rolling Block Heavy Barrel Sporting Rifle with
Engraver’s Certificate of Proof in .45-90 W.C.F. - Serial no. 11177, 45-90
WCF cal., 35 inch round bbl., blue/bright finish, walnut stock. Built in 2019 by
Terence A. Smith, utilizing an original Remington designed, likely Spanish Oviedo
produced, No. 1 rolling block action that was manufactured c. 1871-1893. These
single shot rifles, much like those made by Sharps, were, and still are, highly valued
for their simplicity, rugged dependability, long range accuracy, strong action, and
powerful calibers. This example is no exception, having been given a second life
by the very talented artisan Terence A. Smith, who was formerly employed by both
Boss & Co. and Holland & Holland. The included Certificate of Proof provided by
The Birmingham Gun Barrel Proof House states that this rolling block rifle was made
by T.A. Smith and lists the serial number and caliber. The rifle was built beautifully,
following a similar pattern as the Remington-Hepburn No. 3 Long Range Creedmoor
rifles, having deluxe checkered wood and the three short “Creedmoor” flats on the barrel
at the breech. The action of this rifle has been beautifully engraved by Smith, showing near
full-coverage. The engraving is American Civil War themed with detailed battle scenes on
both sides of the action, “U.S./CIVIL/WAR” on the rear of the breech block, “1st & 2nd MANNASSAS”
and “GETTYSBURG” on the left and right lower edges, and “1861”, “CS US”, and “1865” on the pivot pin
components on the left.
