The lock has an internal wheel and the flat lockplate is engraved with a scene
of horsemen firing pistols, a pair of figures with a chained captive around
the wheel stem, and a variety of masks, figures, and
scrollwork on the fittings. The double set triggers plate
has a sculpted finial and is engraved with a mask with the
front trigger sticking out of its mouth, and the extended
trigger guard has foliate finials. The full-length stock has
relief scroll carving, contrasting light and dark horn inlays,
“IV/15” marked at the toe, and “416” marked below the
lock. The wooden ramrod has coordinating light and dark
horn at the tip. The lot includes a
certificate of authenticity filled out for
Norman R. Blank by F. Theodore Dexter.
CONDITION: Fine with crisp engraving and markings,
silver-gray patina, minor oxidation/pitting, and generally light overall age
and storage related wear. The stock is also fine and has crisp carving, some
cracks and repairs, mild scratches and dings, and a few chips. The set triggers
mechanically function. The lock has not been tested.

Panel Scene Engraved Wheellock Sporting Rifle by
Caspar Zelner of Vienna - NSN, 28 bore cal., 32 5/8 inch
octagon bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This c. 1690 deluxe
rifle by royal gunmaker Caspar Zelner (aka Zellner, 1661-1745)
features a swamped octagonal barrel with seven-groove
rifling, a dovetailed blade front sight, dovetailed three-leaf
rear sight with scroll finial, “CASPAR [sunken maker’s mark]
ZELNER” signed on top with light engraved accents, chiseled
bead pattern border at the breech, and “22” stamped on the
short iron tang.
