Fine Pair of Gold Inlaid, Engraved, and Relief Carved Spanish
Miquelet Belt Pistols
-A) Spanish Miquelet
Pistol - NSN, 65 cal., 8 3/4
inch part octagon bbl., blue/
gold/bright finish, walnut stock.
This pair of pistols bears the maker’s marks of Domingo Gabiola (active c. 1790-1815)
and Gaspar Rusta (active c. 1790-1810) of Eibar, Spain. The smoothbore, “cannon” barrels
feature gold inlaid bands at the muzzles, additional gold accenting the
scroll engraving at the
transition points, gold inlaid
scrollwork on the octagonal
breech sections, gold panels at
the breech ends, and sunken gold
inlaid cross, fleur-de-lis, and “crown/Y/RUS/TA” markings. The locks and
trigger guards have sunken gold lined gold “crown/GA/BIO/lA” maker’s marks. The pommel caps
also feature engraved busts of what appears to be a Native American with gold backgrounds.
The locks and furniture also feature chiseled designs. The stocks have decorative molding and raised relief floral
carving. The ramrods have dark horn tips.
CONDITION: Fine with bright original gold, strong original blue on the breech section and protected areas, gray and
brown patina on the balance, distinct markings and designs, and generally only mild age and storage related wear. The
refinished stock is very good and has repairs in the wrist, crisp carving and molding,
and mild dings and scratches. Mechanically functions.
B) Spanish Miquelet Pistol - NSN, 65 cal., 8 3/4 inch part octagon bbl., blue/gold/bright finish, walnut stock. As described in “A.”
CONDITION: Fine with bright original gold, strong original blue finish in the protected areas, gray and brown patina on the balance,
distinct markings and designs, and generally fairly minor overall wear from age and storage. The refinished stock is very good and has
crisp carving and molding, small chips, and scattered dings and scratches. Mechanically functions.

Very Fine Gold
Inlaid, Engraved,
Relief Carved, and
Silver Mounted Spanish Miquelet Belt Pistol by Doiztua - NSN, 69 cal., 8 1/4 inch part octagon bbl., blue/gold/
bright/silver finish, walnut stock. This pistol dates to the late 18th century to early 19th century. The octagonal to round two stage cannon style
barrel is smoothbore and is decorated with engraving with a foliate chiseled girdle with gilt backgrounds at the transition,
gold inlaid foliate scrollwork inhabited by birds on the breech section, a sunken gold lined “crown/FRo/DOIZ/TUA” maker’s
mark (possibly relating to or for a relative of Antonio Doiztua, master examiner at Plasencia), a fleur-de-lis motif gold inlaid band ahead of the
bright foliate and border engraved standing breech, and a gold vent. The bright, flat lock plate has border engraving, and the lock components
are finely chiseled. The priming pan is gold lined. The silver mounts includes foliate, martial trophy, and border
designs. A belt hook is fitted to the left. The stock features attractive molding, raised relief floral carving, and a
raised relief crown over crossed cannons and other martial trophies at the wrist. With a wooden ramrod with horn tip.
CONDITION: Very fine with 75% plus blue, bright original gold, silver-gray patina on the standing breech and lock, minor
oxidation, attractive aged patina on the silver mounts, and generally light age and storage related wear. Aside from a repaired
crack in the forend, the stock is fine and has crisp carving and minor wear. Mechanically functions.

LOT 3324
Silver Mounted Spanish Plug Bayonet and Scabbard - Plug bayonets
were the first bayonets, and continued to be popular in Spain long after socket
bayonets became popular for military use. This example comes from Spain
c. 1800 and has a tapered horn handle to provide a tight fit
with a ball near the crossguard. The pommel cap and guard
are pierced and engraved silver, as are the mounts on the
very scarce tortoise shell scabbard. The 14 3/8 inch blade is marked with what
appears to be “FROCHATEGV” and “TOLOSA”.
CONDITION: Fine with attractively aged patina on the silver mounts, silver-gray blade with spots of
pitting and a blunt tip, minor age cracks in the horn, and general mild wear.
