Engraved and Carved Johann Christoph Boessel Double Barrel Flintlock
Gun - NSN, 20 gauge, 39 1/2 inch round bbl., blue/bright finish, walnut stock.
This early 18th century double barrel gun features barrels joined by three bands that also
incorporate the ramrod ferrules and feature a large conjoined flat at the
breech signed “Johann/Christoph/Bossel/a: Suhl” in
script and engraved with scrollwork. The front band
features the blade front sight, and the standing breech
is grooved for a rear sight. The rounded locks are each
signed “Joh Christoph Bossel”
in script (the left lock has the
signature mirrored), and the locks
each feature a molded border
and blued fittings. The walnut
half-stock has a light horn forend cap, molding and relief carving,
a cheekpiece on the left, and chiseled iron mounts with foliate finials. The buttplate is
inscribed “no 66” at the toe. When sold as part of the W. Keith Neal Collection in 2001,
Christie’s, Lot 140, October 25, 2001, the catalog noted: “Double guns with separate side-
by-side barrels date mostly from the first quarter of the 18th century and are almost exclusively French (‘fusils à bande’) See Arne Hoff, Feuerwaffen,
vol. II, pp. 40-41, plates 28 a, b, and D.H.L. Back, ‘The use of Double Barrel Guns for Sporting Purposes in the Eighteenth Century’, The Fifth Park Lane
Arms Fair, February 1988, pp. 7-8, plates 1-3.” Norman R. Blank’s invoice for this gun from Christie’s dated 2001 and Cadogan Tate dated January 23, 2002, are included.
CONDITION: Very fine with 80% re-blued finish, bright polished locks and furniture, and minor age and storage related wear. The stock is fine and has some minor chips and
cracks mainly at the lock mortises, some scratches and dings, and crisp molding and carving. Mechanically excellent.

LOT 3320
Single Barrel Flintlock Smoothbore Sporting Gun by Penterman of Utrecht - NSN, 15
gauge, 36 3/4 inch round bbl., blue/bright finish, walnut stock. This gun is likely by Barend Penterman
in the first quarter of the 18th century. His brother Gerrit was also previously active in Utrecht before moving
to Leeuwarden (see p. 934-935 of “Der Neue Stockel” by Herr). The fire blued smoothbore barrel has a silver blade
front sight, proof mark and “PENTERMAN UTRECHT” signed at the breech, scroll engraving and a groove rear sight at
the breech end, and bright finished grooved tang with engraving. The rounded lock is signed “PENTERMAN/UTRECHT.” The
mounts are brass and feature foliate finials. The walnut half-stock has molding and a rectangular cheekpiece
with carving at the rear.
CONDITION: Very fine with 70% original blue finish, silver-gray patina on the lock, minor oxidation, aged patina on the
mounts, and mild wear. The stock is fine and has some cracks and repairs in the butt and general mild scratches and
dings. Mechanically excellent.
