World War II U.S. J. Stevens Arms Co. Model 620 Slide Action Trench Shotgun -
Serial no. 26257, 12 gauge, 20 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. One of a reported total of
12,174 Model 620 (also known as the 620A) slide action shotguns of all variants (trench, riot, and training)
manufactured by the J. Stevens Arms Company c. 1940-1945 under contract for the U.S. Government during
World War II, as discussed on pages 94-95 of “Complete Guide to
United States Military Combat Shotguns” (2007
publication) by Bruce N. Canfield. A streamlined
improvement over the previous Model 520, the Model 620 was
introduced in 1927, with the slightly modified version, the Model 620A, being introduced in 1940, with the
only appreciable different being the stock attachment method. With its solid frame hammerless design, the
Model 620A proved well suited to the role of a combat shotgun, with the capability to both “slam fire” and take-
down for easier stowage, and was standardized after World War II, continuing to see use by both the U.S. Army and
U.S. Marine Corps through the Korean and Vietnam wars. Features a single brass bead on the three screw hole bayonet lug adapter (only
one central screw installed) with six-hole perforated steel heat shield, surrounding the blued barrel marked with the gauge and 2 3/4 inch
chamber designations on the left along with the three-line J. Stevens/Savage Arms address as well as an “ordnance bomb” and “P” on the right side, “P” marked
on top of the chamber and receiver, the serial number on the underside of the trigger guard, along with “P/ordnance bomb”, the model marking, and “U.S.” marked on the left side of the receiver.
Fitted with a smooth rounded walnut slide forearm and a semi-pistol grip walnut buttstock with a serrated black synthetic butt. Length-of-pull (LOP) is 14 inches.
CONDITION: Very fine, retaining 85% plus original dull wartime blue finish with a correct bright plum hue on the bayonet lug adapter, two absent bayonet lug adapter securing screws, some
scattered minor edge wear, some light cycling/slide wear on the tube, some scattered dried grease, a few light handling marks/scratches, and clear stamps. The wood is very fine with scattered light
compression marks, a hairline crack at the top of the wrist, and attractively aged and darkened oil finish. Mechanically excellent.
Estimate: 3,500 - 5,500
