Very Scarce Early Production
Mannlicher Model 1896 Semi-
Automatic Pistol, Serial Number “6.” - Serial no. 6., 7.65 mm cal., 4 3/4 inch
round bbl., blue finish, checkered hardwood grips. This pistol is often called the
Model 1896/03 due to the fact that it was originally developed in 1896 (at the same
time as the 1896 Mauser pistol), however, it was not commercially introduced onto
the market until around 1903. An improvement on earlier Mannlicher work, the 1896 uses a short-
recoiling receiver and bolt assembly with clip-loading capability similar to the contemporary Broomhandle
pistol, but integrates a low profile double-stack detachable magazine and an internal hammer assembly with an exterior
cocking lever that doubles as a hammer indicator. Blade front and notch rear sights, with the “conjoined BP” proof on top of
the chamber and “6.” on the left side of the chamber and receiver and “114” on the magazine floorplate. The aforementioned
cocking lever is mounted on the right side of the trigger assembly, with a safety switch behind the receiver and a pair of
checkered wood grips.
CONDITION: Very good, with 75% of the original blue finish, showing a brown patina on the barrel, scattered light scratches
and spotting, and edge wear. The bolt shows a small patch of pitting behind the charging handle. The grips are good, with
evidence of being internally renumbered, and a few scuffs and dings on the crisp checkering. Mechanically functions.
Provenance: The Collection of Clive Cussler.
Estimate: 9,500 - 16,000

Mannlicher Model 1896/1901 Semi-Automatic Carbine with Matching Magazine - Serial no. 872, 7.63 mm
Mannlicher Auto cal., 11 3/4 inch round bbl., blue finish, hardwood stock. Brought into development in 1896,
the Mannlicher design was a close contemporary and competitor for the Mauser Broomhandle, showing many external
resemblances but with a great deal of internal distinction. The particular item is the carbine variant, which would give compact
and lightweight repeating firepower suitable for light game and plinking in the field. Please note that the post-1898 Mannlicher pistol caliber carbine is listed
in Section III of the 2018 edition of the BATFE Firearms Curios or Relics list, declaring it a collector item exempt from classification as a Short Barreled Rifle under
the National Firearms Act. This later model uses a detachable magazine that can be either top-loaded via stripper clips or removed and replaced as needed. Blade front and four-
position elevation adjustable notch rear sights, with a full length hardwood barrel shroud and a round-topped bolt on the receiver assembly, and a detachable trigger housing and
dual purpose cocking lever/cocking indicator on the right side of the frame. Fitted with a smooth pistol grip stock with a flat steel buttplate. Matching numbers are present on the
left side of the receiver, magazine catch and on the magazine.
CONDITION: Fine, with 80% of the period refinished blue, showing edge wear, tool marks and minor spotting. The forearm has a spliced repair on the left side, and the buttplate
shows a number of dents and covered pits; otherwise, the refinished wood is very good, with minor scratches and dents. Mechanically excellent.
Provenance: The Collection of Clive Cussler.
