Adolph “Ad” Topperwein Signed Indian Chief “Shoot Out”
Bullet Art - Born in Texas in 1869, Adolf “Ad” Toepperwein
(later anglicized as Topperwein) entered the field of exhibition
shooting in 1889 and began a relationship with Winchester as
a sales rep and publicity agent in 1901. This association would
lead him to meet his future wife and second half of the “Amazing
Topperweins”, Elizabeth “Plinky” Toepperwein, with whom he would perform feats of public
marksmanship from 1904 to 1943. One of his best known demonstrations was the “Shoot Out”, an
exhibition of precision where he would take aim at a metal target and create art one bullet hole
at a time before a live audience. This example, a metal sheet installed in a display frame with a 19
3/4 inch wide and 28 inch tall visible area, has been shot out in the form of a stereotypical “Indian
Chief” in side profile with headdress, with the upper left corner signed “Shot by/Ad Topperwein/
Winchester/Aug 18-40”. The bullet holes have rough edges, with measurements ranging from .22
to .28; there is no note of what weapon or weapons were used to shoot out the design.
CONDITION: Fine overall, with minor wear. The pattern is clearly legible and sharply executed. The
signature is very fine.
Provenance: The Howard “Skip” Quade Collection.
Estimate: 2,000 - 3,000
