Historic Winchester Exhibition
Shooter Jim Levack Attributed
Winchester Model 1892 Lever
Action Saddle Ring Carbine
with Rare Maple Stock - Serial
no. 887356, 44 WCF cal., 20 inch
round bbl., blue/chrome finish,
maple stock. Jim Levack was a
veteran of the First World War
that, after winning numerous
shooting championships,
became a member of the U.S.
rifle team in 1935 and eventually
an exhibition shooter for
Winchester. During the period
of the 1930s when exhibition
shooting was wildly popular,
Levack did many of the typical
tricks such as shooting the center of a washer with a rifle or throwing a handful of objects in the air
and hitting them all before they hit the ground. However, one trick that set him apart was his form of golf. He played “with a
.44 caliber rifle. His tee ‘shots’ travel up to 200 yards, and he ‘blasts’ out of sand traps with the greatest of ease. He uses a rifle butt for
putting.” It is very possible that this carbine is that very “rifle” being mentioned as his “driver” in these newspaper articles, and a picture in
the Chattanooga Daily Times from 24 October 1936 appears to show Levack holding an 1892 saddle ring carbine, again possibly this one.
Manufactured in 1921, this carbine may have been a part of hundreds of Levack’s exhibitions.
