The wrist escutcheon on the current rifle is neatly inscribed “DA”, presumably the initials of the original
owner. The swamped smoothbore barrel has a dovetailed brass blade front sight and dovetailed iron
notch rear sight. The lock is marked with a sunken “PH” maker’s mark on the inside and another “H” mark.
“V” assembly marks are on various lock components. The gun features a plain trigger. The mounts aside
from the noted silver inlays are brass, and the four-piece patchbox features a diamond pattern down the
lid, wavy line borders, scroll patterns, and a concealed release in the upper plate. An iron tow worm is
inside the patchbox. The stock has fine molding terminating in incised wavy lines at the ramrod entry-
point, beautifully shaped drop flats, relief carved scrolls at the barrel tang and butt, and molding along
the bottom of the butt. The short brass toe plate is secured by two iron pins and has wavy line engraving.
