Exceptional Fantasy Gargoyle Themed Factory Relief Engraved
Connecticut Shotgun
Manufacturing Co. Model 21 Double Rifle in
.22 Magnum - Serial no.
SWR38865, 22 magnum
cal., 22 inch solid rib
bbl., blue/coin finish, walnut stock. Built only on a special order basis, these tiny double rifles use a special frame smaller than that of the already diminutive .410 bore Model 21 frames. This rifle is built with blued steel barrels with ramped beaded blade front sight, dovetailed notch rear sight on the rear quarter rib which is marked with the standard C.S.M.C. markings and the caliber “22 MAG”, and chambers with automatic ejectors. The barrels both show 2 1/2 inch wedges of scroll engraving surrounding a lizard at their breeches. The coin grey finished boxlock action displays full coverage deep chisel cut gargoyle and fantasy themed engraving consisting of Chinese inspired
dragons on either side, a pair of gargoyles facing one another on the underside along with a gargoyle mask, bestial
busts on the fences, a bestial figure on the trigger guard, lizards on both tangs and top of the action, and another
gargoyle mask on the toplever. The engraving is surrounded by floral engraving which nicely frames the principle designs.
All of the deep chisel cut engraving is rendered in beautiful detail and is set against a dark matted background making for
a beautiful contrast. The particular C.S.M.C. engraver is unknown, however, they are certainly a master of their craft. The rifle features a single selective gold trigger and a tang mounted automatic safety switch. Beautiful feather crotch figured, fancy fleur-de-lis checkered (Winchester 21-B pattern) beavertail forend with ebony tip insert and engraved fittings, including the rotary latch release, and pistol grip stock with engraved coin gripcap, shadowline cheekpiece, blank inscription oval, and coin finished heel and toe plates with bestial engraving around a checkered bare butt. This is a very nice piece displaying an engraving style and caliber not usually seen on a fine double rifle such as this. Length of pull 14 7/16 inches. Weight 5 lbs 2 oz.
CONDITION: Excellent overall, retaining 99% original blue and coin finishes, limited handling evidence, a few tiny blemishes in the stock varnish, crisp
engraving, and sharp checkering on the stock and forend. Mechanically excellent. This is a rare chance to own a beautifully crafted small bore double rifle! 250 Estimate: 25,000 - 40,000
