Very Fine British BSA Model L42A1 Enfield Bolt Action Sniper
Rifle with Scope, Transport Case and “Scout Regiment”
Spotting Scope - Serial no. V38361, 7.62 cal., 27 1/2 inch round
bbl., black finish, walnut stock. Developed in the 1960s and
deployed in the 1970s, the Enfield L42A1 was an upgrade of the No. 4 Mk I (T) sniper rifle configured for use with
7.62x51 NATO ammunition, fitted with a high pressure bolt head and hammer forged target barrel. Additionally, No. 32 Mk III scopes were also upgraded to match the new caliber. About half of the approximately 900 L42A1 rifles manufactured were condemned and destroyed post-service by the Ministry of Defense. Standard iron sights mounted on the barrel and receiver. “19T” on top of the extractor assembly and bolt handle, and “L42A1 D71”
on the left side of the receiver. The scope body is finished in black, with the original No. 32 Mk III markings lined out and the original “AK&S” manufacturer and “1945” date markings left untouched, and “1240-99-963-2063/TEL STRT STG L1A1/OS2429 GA/No22913” added below, and the ring base numbered “V38361” to match the rifle. Smooth stock, with a brass buttplate and an extended cheekpiece attached to the comb. Import mark underneath the barrel. Included with the rifle is a green painted hardwood transport case, a green steel scope case stenciled
to match the scope and tagged to match the rifle, leather case strap, green nylon sling, and a large “spyglass” style collapsing scope marked “TELE. SCT.REGTS. MK2/ H.C.R. & SON Ltd/OS 126 GA/NO.28421/(broad arrow)”, with a brass body and textured exterior. Traditionally carried by the “observer” (aka spotter) in a 2-man sniper team, the Scout Regiment scope provided a high power optic that was very useful for spotting enemy forces that were either camouflaged or concealed in deep foliage, which could potentially include enemy snipers.
CONDITION: Very fine as arsenal rebuilt with 90% plus black finish, showing some light handling marks and edge wear overall. The stock is in equal condition, with some light pressure dents. The scout regiment scope has a loose lens and is need of repair, the L1A1 rifle scope is very good, with crisp optics and mild exterior wear, and the transport case is very good. Mechanically excellent.
