Exceptional Engraved Griffin &
Howe Model 1903 Bolt Action .30-06 Sporting Rifle - Serial no. 1558, 30-06 cal., 24 inch round bbl.,
blue finish, fancy checkered walnut stock. Built on a Model 1903 action, this
rifle features a ramped hooded blade front sight, three leaf express rear sight on
a matted raised quarter rib, and peep rear sight on the rear receiver ring. The barrel features
finely executed floral scroll engraving on either side of the ramp and central sling sling loop, as well as a block of floral scroll extending from the end of the front sight towards the quarter rib. The barrel is marked “No 1558 Griffin & Howe Inc. New York” in the center with “30-06 Gov.” to the left of the quarter rib. Coming off the receiver on either side of the rib is a spray of floral scroll work. The
front receiver ring is matted with more floral scroll spilling of either side. The engraving even extends to the bolt shroud and the sides of the peep sight. The markings on the safety and magazine cutoff are inlaid in gold. The floorplate exhibits a masterfully relief engraved scene of six sheep on a mountain side surrounded by more floral scroll and a hunter on horseback in front of his cabin on the triggerguard. The action and barrel are mounted in a wonderfully contrasted, lightly figured multipoint checkered walnut stock with horn forend cap, shadowline cheekpiece, engraved sling eye, a silver initial escutcheon engraved with the initials “KWB”, and blued steel buttplate.
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine as custom built and elaborately engraved by Griffin & Howe, retaining 99% plus custom blue finish with limited handling marks and crisp engraving. The stock is extremely fine with some scattered minor handling marks, a couple of small chips on the forend cap, and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. This wonderful rifle would be at home in any high end sporting arms collection!
