Fine Documented ATF Exempted Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Saddle Ring Trapper’s Carbine with 15 Inch Barrel - Serial no. 998852, 44 WCF cal., 15 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1930, this is a very scarce trapper’s carbine with a factory original 15 inch barrel. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms lists this carbine as being removed from the purview of the National Firearms Act and classified as a curio and relic and a copy of the ATF exemption letter is included. These guns would have been highly prized by western ranchers and cowboys for their portability and firepower. It has standard markings including Winchester factory oval proofs on the barrel and receiver at the breech. It is fitted with pinned blade front and folding ladder rear sights, and a saddle ring on the left of the receiver. It’s mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a carbine buttplate.
CONDITION: Fine, retains 50% of the original blue finish with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth grey-brown patina typical of a western working gun. The wood is also fine with the numerous minor dings and scratches scattered throughout telling the story of
its time on the frontier, and a minor chip absent on the left near the upper tang. Mechanically excellent. A very desirable Winchester Model 1892 Trapper’s carbine that has the look of spending many years as a working gun in the west!
Provenance: The Brandhorst Collection.
Estimate: 5,500 - 8,500
