Ornate Silver Inlaid, Gilt, Relief Chiseled, and Relief Carved Half-Stock Smoothbore Flintlock Sporting Gun - NSN, 20 gauge, 39 inch part octagon bbl., brown/silver/bright/gold finish, walnut stock. The smoothbore, Damascus, two-
stage barrel has a silver blade front sight with a flush inlaid “spider” base, series of bands at the transition point, silver wire inlays on top, silver inset marker’s marks
at the breech, and a bright steel tang with “2” marking and some scroll engraving. The marker’s mark is somewhat obscured but appears to read “crown/ROCH/US/ SVHO/BER” followed by a separate horse emblem. The lock has relief engraved martial trophies, masks, scrollwork, and a wooded scene of a man with his horse. The furniture is gilt brass and features mainly a variety of scroll and hunting themed designs, including hunters and dogs on the buttplate and toeplate. The wrist escutcheon has a coronet and a profile portrait of a lady. The heel tang includes
a female figure playing a lute and a dog. The stock has intricate interlaced scroll carving, nice molding, and attractive finish.
CONDITION: Very fine as professionally restored with 85% plus of the brown finish remaining on the barrel along with distinct twist patterns and the vast majority of the inlay, silver-gray patina and crisp engraving on the lock, some minor pitting, light aged patina on most of the furniture, crisp designs, and mild overall wear. The refinished stock is also very fine and has some filled insect holes, some repairs and cracks, distinct carving, minor scratches and dings, and attractive figure. Mechanically excellent.

Engraved and Relief Carved Johann Andreas Kuchenreuter Flintlock Smoothbore Sporting Gun - NSN, 20 gauge, 43 3/4 inch part octagon bbl., blue/ gold finish, walnut stock. This attractive sporting gun
is from Johann Andreas Kuchenreuter (1716-1795) of Regensburg, Bavaria, and is signed “.IOH. AND. KUCHENREUTER.” in silver inlay on top of the barrel. The two-stage barrel has a silver blade front sight
with flush “spider” base, scroll engraving on the breech section, and a sunken lion mark on top at the breech. The brass lock plate has an engraved scene of a rider and dogs chasing a boar. The
gilt brass furniture has scroll, mask, and hunting scene patterns, including another boar scene on
the buttplate and dogs subduing a stag on the intricately pierced side plate. The stock has a horn forend tip, mix of incised and raised relief scroll and floral carving, a large rounded cheekrest, and a small compartment on the bottom (added later).
