Engraved and Raised Relief Carved Spanish Miquelet
Pistol - NSN, 69 cal., 7 1/2
inch part octagon bbl., bright finish, relief walnut stock. The Spanish used
the miquelet lock from the 16th century into the 19th century. This pistol is from later in that period. The smoothbore barrel has decorative girdles at the transition point, three fleurs-de-lis on the upper flats at the breech, a maker’s mark on top
at the breech, and some light engraving on the tang. The lock and brass furniture also have floral
engraving. The stock has raised relief carved floral patterns with bird heads incorporated in the designs flaking the upper tang.
CONDITION: Very good with mostly brown patina on the iron, aged patina on the brass, a chip at the tail of the lock, crisp carving and engraving, mild scratches and dings, and moderate overall wear. Mechanically fine. Provenance: The Collection of Joe M. Wanenmacher Jr. Estimate: 2,000 - 3,000
LOT 1315
Silver Accented, Engraved, and Relief Carved Spanish Miquelet Pocket Pistol by Eudal Mola - NSN, 69 cal., 3 3/4 inch octagon bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Eudal Mola is identified as active in Ripoll in the late 18th century, but his family had been active in the region since the late 17th century. The smoothbore barrel bad a ringed muzzle, polygonal fore-section, banded transition point, silver inlaid floral patterns on the octagonal breech section, a sunken copper maker’s mark for Eudal Mola on top at the breech, and an engraved tang. The lock has some light engraving. The furniture is brass with scroll engraving and silver accents in the shapes of classical warrior busts. The oval wrist escutcheon is also silver and has floral engraving. The stock has some nice molding on the forend, incised borders around the trigger guard, and elaborate raised relief floral carving at the barrel tang. CONDITION: Very good. The lock and barrel have mottled gray patina and some mild pitting. The brass and silver have dark aged patina. The engraving is generally crisp. The stock is also very good with a couple of thin cracks on the left side of the forend and has nice carving and minor age and storage related wear. Mechanically fine. LOT 1316 Rare Aylsham Marked Pill-Lock Pistol - NSN, 18 Bore cal., 6 1/2 inch flat top
round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Manufactured c. 1830s. The smoothbore barrel has a flat top with a bead front sight and “AYLSHAM” signed on top.
The underside of the barrel has two proofs that look like “crown/OP” similar to the London “crown/ GP” proof with an “X” and what looks to be “STUBS” in between and a “B” at the breech. The lock is not marked. The standing breech has martial and floral engraving, and the trigger guard has a
pineapple finial and floral engraving. The stock has a checkered wrist. The ramrod has a horn tip.
Aylsham, Norfolk, England, is on the River Bure near the North Sea. CONDITION: Very good with mostly silver-gray patina on the polished metal surfaces, patches of mild pitting, and general mild overall wear. The re-oiled stock is also very good and has crisp checkering, a thin crack at the tail of the flats, and general dings and scratches. Mechanically fine. Provenance: The Collection of Joe M. Engraved and Lazarino Marked Italian Snaphance Pistol - NSN, 48 cal., 10 1/4 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. The snaphance, aka snaphaunce, was introduced around 1550 and was used alongside the matchlocks, wheellocks, and other early firearms ignition systems until most of them were replaced by the flintlock in the 17th century. The Italians, however, continued to manufacture snaphances into the mid-18th century. This smoothbore pistol is signed “L. LAZARINO” on the short sighting flat and has faint engraving at the breech. The lock has a variety of mainly mask designs, including raised relief chiseled grotesque masks, and the steel and cock are also finely shaped and chiseled. The lock has the proper automatically opening pan and only a full-cock notch on the tumbler. The furniture is all iron and has some border engraving and a small pastoral scene on the pierced scroll pattern side plate. The stock has molding, raised flats, and some nice figure. CONDITION: Good with mainly gray patina, some minor oxidation/pitting, some softened engraving, distinct chiseled marks, and mild overall wear. The stock is fair and has several filled holes, some cracks and repairs, and general moderate wear. Mechanically fine. Provenance: The Collection of Joe M. Wanenmacher Jr. Estimate: 1,800 - 2,750

LOT 1318 Lazari Cominaz Marked Italian Snaphance Pistol - NSN, 24 bore cal., 10 7/8 inch part octagon bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. The snaphance, aka snaphaunce, was introduced around 1550 and was used alongside the matchlocks, wheellocks, and other early firearms ignition systems until most of them were replaced by the flintlock in the 17th century. The Italians, however, continued to manufacture snaphances into the mid-18th century. This smoothbore pistol is signed “LAZARI COMINAZ” on top of the barrel, and the breech section also has raised ribs. The left side has an “S” shaped side plate and a belt hook. The inside of the lock has what appears to be “Antrio Cheloni.” There is some light floral engraving. The stock is nicely figured. CONDITION: Fair overall with gray patina, moderate pitting, some poor fit, and heavy wear. The refinished stock is poor and has cracks and numerous filled repairs. Mechanically fair.
