LOT 1504
Excellent Documented U.S. Springfield M1 Garand Type I National Match Semi-Automatic Rifle with Raritan Arsenal Shipping Documents - Serial no. 5946411, 30-06 Springfield cal., 24 inch round bbl., parkerized finish, walnut stock. This is an excellent example of a late production U.S. Springfield M1 Garand, manufactured as an early pattern Type I National Match M1 Garand Rifle. Due to rules in place that required National Match weapons to be essentially “as issued”, none of the more extensive upgrades seen on the subsequent Type II National Match Garand rifles are present on the Type I. In lieu of proprietary components, the Type Is were built using hand picked components with great attention to fit and detail, making them “as issued” but of the highest possible quality. The original included documents, contained in a mailing envelope, titled “Army Shipping Document” identifies this rifle by serial number as a “National Match” sold and
originally shipped on May 28th, 1956 to individual Edward J. Prezkuta located in Hicksville, New York from the Raritan Arsenal (the rifle was likely brand new when sold). Springfield barrel dated “10 55” with DoD eagle (factory overstamped) and single letter proofs on the right of the chamber, “NM” marked on the left of the barrel, “DRC” windage knob, “SA” relief cut operating rod, bolt, trigger housing, hammer and safety. Smooth pistol grip stock (not glass bedded, correct for a Type I National Match) with DoD eagle stamp on the left, circled “P” proof on the underside of the wrist, and checkered steel
buttplate. Includes an American Rifleman magazine containing information about the M1 Garand, oiler, tool, and cleaning rod in the butt compartment. Information on these Type I National Match M1 Garand rifles can be found on pages 546-550 of the book “The M1 Garand Rifle” by Bruce Canfield. CONDITION: Excellent plus, retains 99% original parkerized finish with some light handling marks. Stock is also excellent with rich oil finish and distinct edges, a few light handling marks, and exceptionally crisp stampings. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 3,500 - 5,500
LOT 1505
Very Fine Pre-World War I U.S. Springfield Model 1903 Bolt Action N.R.A. Sales Rifle with Bayonet - Serial no. 624062, 30-06 Springfield cal., 24 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. This is a very desirable example of a U.S. Springfield Model 1903 bolt action N.R.A. sales rifle. This rifle is marked with the distinctive Ordnance shell and flame insignia over “N.R.A.” underneath the front of the trigger guard
assembly to differentiate it from the standard issued service rifles. These N.R.A. marked rifles were available only to N.R.A. members prior to U.S. entry into World War I. All N.R.A. sales rifles were brand new (never rebuilt or altered) and subjected to stringent inspection criteria to include hand selection of the rifle based on the beauty of the wood components for color and uniformity, overall high grade blue finish and Star Gauging of the barrel to ensure land and groove uniformity for the best possible accuracy. These rifles were intended for National Match shooting prior to World War
I. The receiver is roll marked with the five-line, standard Springfield Armory markings, and the top of the barrel is stamped “S.A.” above the Ordnance shell and flame insignia and the date “1-16”. The rifle has an oil quenched casehardened receiver and all blued milled components that include the barrel bands, bolt, trigger guard, and floorplate. The safety and cut-off lever are casehardened. It is fitted with a walnut “S” style stock that has a single reinforcing bolt, high hump handguard with proper rear sight clearance cut and spring clips, and checkered steel buttplate with compartment. The rifle has a serrated trigger, dished windage and elevation knob, and rear sight leaf with the 2,850 yard notch. “H” marked on the bayonet lug, “C 6” marked on the right of the rear bolt lug, the left stock wrist is stamped with the Ordnance final inspection initials “J.S.A.” in a rectangle, a small “D” in the cutoff recess, and a small “15” above a circled script “P” firing proof stamped behind the trigger guard. Includes a “1916” dated Springfield M1905 bayonet, tan canvas scabbard, “1914” dated Rock Island Arsenal M1907 leather sling, and oiler inside the butt compartment. CONDITION: Very fine, retains 85% original blue and oil-quenched finish with a few small patches of light flaking and light freckling, a partially struck N.R.A. stamp with otherwise sharp markings and edges in the metal. Stock is excellent with crisp grasping grooves, defined edges, some light scratches and handling marks, a minor chip at the toe, and a crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet and scabbard are both fine. Estimate: 3,000 - 4,500
