Historic Cased Factory Engraved Colt Pocket Navy Percussion Revolver Inscribed as Presented to William H. Seward by the Colt Patent Fire Arms Mfg. Co. - Serial no. 13253, 36 cal., 6 1/2 inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened/silver finish, antique ivory grips. This model, known at Colt as the “New Model Pocket .36 Cal” but known by various names to collectors is generally believed to have been manufactured c. 1865-1873 mainly in its own separate range rather than intermixed with Model 1862 Police. They first appear in known factory records
in 1865. This revolver features the “late percussion vine scroll” engraving patterns on the barrel, loading lever, frame, trigger guard, and back strap. The hammer has the wolf’s head motif. The barrel has a brass post front sight and “ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-” marked on top. The rebated cylinder has the stagecoach hold-up scene. The frame has the “COLTS/PATENT” marking. The trigger guard has “V” and “36 CAL” on the left. Matching serial numbers are marked on the cylinder, wedge, arbor pin, barrel, frame, trigger guard, and back strap. The back strap is inscribed “Presented to William H. Seward Esq/By Colts Pat F.A. Mfg Co.” cut through the silver plating.
The fitted case contains an Eley Bros. cap tin, ball/bullet mold, eagle pattern powder flask, cartridge pack, and a few balls and bullets. A card from William Seward’s son Frederick as Assistant Secretary of State is also included.
