Excellent World War II
German “Last Ditch” A-Prefix Spreewerke
“cyq” Code P.38 Semi-
Automatic Pistol with
Shoulder Holster - Serial
no. A8074, 9 mm Luger
cal., 4 7/8 inch round bbl.,
blue finish, plastic grips. One
of the last P.38s made for the
Axis Powers during World War II,
this Spreewerke P.38 shows much
of the typical corner-cutting of
the time period, with a lower
degree of polishing on the non-
bearing surfaces than earlier
contract pistols. Standing
out from the average is a
significant machining blemish
on the left side of the slide; an
error like this would have condemned a slide in 1941, but in 1945 they could no longer afford to be that picky. Fixed sights, with “P.38” and “cyq” marked on the slide, “eagle/88”, “eagle” and “*” proofs on the appropriate areas, and matching numbers on the slide, frame, barrel and locking lug. The “cyq” and serial number on the slide have been stamped into the machining error. The grips are ribbed black plastic, with a blued “jvd” marked magazine. Included with the lot is a brown leather chest/ shoulder holster with a faded Waffenamt stamp on the back and a “B” marked extra magazine. CONDITION: Excellent, with 98% of the original blue finish, showing some bright edge wear, minor handling marks, and some thinning on the frame. The grips are also excellent, with a few minor dings. The holster is fine, with some cracking and scuffing overall, strong stitching, and supple leather. Mechanically excellent.
Provenance: The Paul Crockett Jr. Collection.
Estimate: 1,600 - 2,500
