World War

Occupation
Commercial
Production
Fabrique Nationale High-Power
Semi-Automatic Pistol Slotted for Shoulder
Stock - Serial no. 41557b, 9 mm para cal., 4 3/4 inch
round bbl., blue finish, walnut grips. Manufactured
during the German occupation of Belgium during World
War II, this is a very rare example of a commercial production FN High-
Power pistol that is slotted for a shoulder stock and fitted with fixed sights. A similar example is pictured and described on p. 301 of “FN Browning Pistols: Side-Arms that Shaped the World” by Vanderlinden. He states that these pistols were produced sporadically throughout that standard military production but do not bear the standard “WaA140” Waffenamt acceptance proofs, but rather “eagle/N” commercial proofs. The book states that only between five and eight percent of the High-Power pistols produced during the war were commercially proofed, and out of those, even less were manufactured with back straps slotted for a shoulder stock like this example. The left
side of the slide has the standard three-line FN/
Browning markings, “stacked” serial numbers
and “eagle/N” proofs on the barrel, slide, and
frame, with those on the barrel and frame being
shortened to “557b”. It is fitted with fixed blade and notch sights, checkered walnut grips, and a slotted back strap.
CONDITION: Very fine, retains 75% plus of the original blue finish with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth grey patina, primarily on the grip straps and in the form of light holster wear. The grips are fine with a few scattered light handling marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. A very rare variation of World War II era FN High-Power pistol!
Estimate: 4,500 - 6,500

Described in “Pistols of
the Warlords: 1911-1949” - Serial no. 1935, 9
mm para cal., 4 3/4 inch round bbl., blue finish, hardwood grips.
Likely manufactured during the turbulent and violent period of
the Chinese Civil War, this pistol is a very close copy of a Fabrique
Nationale High-Power in appearance and function, including a
functioning thumb safety. The left side of the slide has markings
very close to its Belgian counterparts, including Belgian style
proofs, which are repeated on the left of the frame. The right of
the slide and frame are marked with the serial number “1935”.
The barrel has more Belgian/Liege style proofs and is marked
“GAL 9M/M P”. It is fitted with a blade front sight, tangent rear
sight graduated to 500 meters, back strap slotted for shoulder
stock, and a pair of checkered hardwood grips. This specific pistol
is pictured and discussed on p. 518-519 of the book “Pistols of the Warlords: 1911-1949” by Ian McCollum. Includes a plain modern box.
CONDITION: Fine, retains 50% of the original blue finish with the balance having thinned to a mixture of bright grey and plum-brown patina, mostly on the edges and grip straps, and a few scattered patches of light surface pitting. The grips are fine with moderate wear, scattered minor handling marks, and mostly well-defined checkering.
Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 4,000 - 6,000

Chinese Manufactured
External Hammer Semi-Automatic Pistol as
Pictured and Described in “Pistols of the Warlords:
1911-1949” - Serial no. 283, 7.63 mm Mauser auto cal., 4
3/4 inch round bbl., blue finish, hardwood grips. Almost
certainly manufactured during the violence and upheaval
of the Chinese Civil War, this pistol, unlike many manufactured in China
at the time, does not appear to be a copy of a European design, but rather
an original homegrown design. This example is entirely unmarked, apart
from the serial number, which is marked in full or partially on various
parts. The last digit of the serial number is very poorly struck and may be
a “3” (as listed in the book) or a “5”. The pistols is a blowback design and
chambered in .7.63 mm Mauser Auto, fitted with blade and notch sights, a
Broomhandle style grasping insert at the rear of the slight, exposed serrated
hammer, and thumb safety lever that may have been functional at one
time. It is also fitted with a pair of hardwood grips with horizontal hand
filed flutes/serrations. This specific pistol is pictured and discussed on p. 154-155 of the book “Pistols of the Warlords: 1911-1949”
by Ian McCollum.
CONDITION: Good, showing
a mostly grey patina overall
with some scattered patches
of light pitting throughout.
The grips are also good with a
hairline crack in the left panel,
minor gouge in the right panel,
and otherwise minor handling
marks. Mechanically fine.
Estimate: 2,250 - 3,250
