Exceptional Deluxe Cased Factory Engraved Early Production Ethan Allen 1837 Patent Percussion Dragoon Pepperbox with Accessories - Serial no. 8, 36 cal., 5 1/8 inch ribbed bbl., blue finish, walnut grips. This early Allen & Thurber larger “dragoon” size pepperbox was manufactured c. 1842-1847 in Norwich based on Ethan Allen’s 1837 patent and has the tension screw near the two on the front strap that readily identifies this variation in addition to the “PATENTED 1837.” and “CAST-STEEL” markings on one of the ribs and “ALLEN’S PATENT” on the left side of the hammer. The hammer also has a slotted sighting hole. “8” is marked on the trigger guard, left side of the front strap, inside both grips, and between two of the nipples. It is likely also inside action under the sideplate, but the sideplate was not removed given the overall high condition of the piece. The nipple shield has the etched scroll patterns, and the frame has floral scroll engraving and a fan and border design extending down the back strap. The grip has the early “dogleg” profile. The closely fitted hardwood case has elevated compartments for the accessories which include: a cylindrical plunger type powder flask with a compartment on the bottom for caps or patches, a large cap tin with R. Walker label, ball puller, loading/cleaning rod, round ball/ conical bullet mold, screwdriver, key, turned bone container for patches or other loose components, and some bullets and balls.
particularly strong original finish on the barrel, some fading to smooth gray and brown patina mainly on the trigger guard and grip straps, crisp etching and engraving, mostly distinct markings, light original case colors on the hammer, and mild overall wear including some minor oxidation. The grips are also very fine and have smooth finish, minor scratches and dings, and general light handling and storage related wear. Mechanically fine. The case is fine with a slightly warped lid, horizontal crack in the bottom, and mild age and storage related wear including natural fading and contact staining of the lining. The accessories are very good and have mild overall wear including some pitting on the iron. This is a very attractive cased set. You do not find the large Allen pepperboxes with presentation cases and accessories very often, especially with this much original finish remaining.
