Very Fine Cased Colt Model 1855 “Root” Sidehammer Pocket Percussion Revolver - Serial no. 29739, 28 cal.,
3 1/2 inch octagon bbl., blue finish, walnut grips. This is an exceptional example of the Model 3 variant of Colt’s
“New Model Pocket Revolving Pistol”
and falls towards the end of the
25001-30000 serial number range for
this variation. It is readily identifiable
based on the 3 1/2 inch octagon
barrel and full fluted cylinder in .28
caliber. The barrel has a brass cone
front sight and is marked with the
two-line, two-block address and
patent marking with crosses. The
rear sight is a groove and notch in
the top strap. The cylinder has the
patent marking in one of the flutes.
Matching serial numbers are visible
on the bottom of the barrel and the
butt. It comes in a fitted hardwood
case with two cap tins, a blued
Colt patent ball and bullet mold,
eagle and crossed revolvers pattern
pocket powder flask, and L-shaped
combination screwdriver.

The grip is excellent and has essentially all of the original varnish and minimal handling marks. The cylinder does not advance when the hammer is cocked; otherwise, the revolver is mechanically excellent. The case and accessories are also very fine and have only minor storage wear.
Estimate: 3,500 - 5,500
LOT 159
Fine Colt Model 1849 Pocket Percussion Revolver -
Serial no. 284730, 31 cal., 6 inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish,
walnut grips. The Model 1849 Pocket was the most popular of all of Colt’s percussion
revolvers. They would certainly have been more convenient for those needing
some personal protection in the gold fields and saloons of the West as well as the
crowded and crime riddled streets of the large cities in the East compared to the larger
Colt Dragoon revolvers or mid-sized Model 1851 Navy and definitely packed more firepower than many of the single and double shot pocket pistols of the day. During the Civil War, many were carried as personal sidearms. Manufactured in 1866. The barrel has the one-line New York address. “COLTS/PATENT” is stamped on the left side of the frame. The cylinder has the
stagecoach hold up scene. Matching full or partial
serial numbers appear on the barrel, frame, trigger
guard, butt, cylinder and handwritten in black ink in
the grip mortise. Unnumbered loading lever, wedge
and cylinder pin.
CONDITION: Fine, retains 75% original blue finish on the
barrel with scattered scratches and freckling, a patch of
dings concentrated on the right around the wedge,
40% plus original casehardened finish with
smooth gray patina on the balance,
strong cylinder scene, and 20% original
silver finish on the trigger guard and
back strap mostly around protected
areas. Grip is also fine with scattered
light scratches, a pressure dent on
the left grip flat, and light edge wear.
Mechanically excellent.
Estimate: 1,600 - 2,500
the First Model serial number range (1341 through about 8000), and has a First Model hammer, but was upgraded with a Second Model cylinder with square stops which
is numbered to the gun (“5668”). The top
barrel flat is marked “ADDRESS SAMl COLT
NEW-YORK CITY”. The left side of the frame is
marked “COLT’S/PATENT” (faint) above a clear
“U.S”. A small inspector initial “G” is present
on the trigger guard. Matching full or partial
serial numbers appear on the barrel, frame,
trigger guard, back strap, cylinder, loading lever, and arbor pin. Illegible number on the wedge. CONDITION: Good as a well-traveled pre-Civil War Colt holster gun displaying a classic “as found” patina. The nose of the hammer has been filed. The well-worn grips show similar working gun character. Mechanically fine. Only an estimated 7,000 Colt First Model Dragoon revolvers were manufactured in 1848 to 1850. They are important to collectors of antique American revolvers in general and Colts in particular as one of Samuel Colt’s large “holster pistols” descended from the famous Colt Walker.
Estimate: 4,500 - 6,500
