Cased Pair of C. Lepage of Liege Engraved and Carved Percussion Dueling Pistols -A) C. Lepage Percussion Pistol - Serial no. 76, 42 cal., 9 7/8 inch octagon bbl., bright finish, ebonized stock. This pistol was manufactured around the 1850s
by Charles Lepage who later partnered with his brother in Lepage Freres (Lepage Brothers) c. 1857-1868. The top of the barrels are marked “C. LEPAGE A LIEGE,” and the bottom of the barrels have “10.0,” Liege proofs, and “76.” The inside of the forend of gun “A” has “J.N” The barrels also have dovetailed blade front sights. The breech plugs and upper tangs are marked “1” (A) and “2” (B) in gold. The tangs also have the fixed notch rear sights. The breech sections, locks, and furniture have leafy scroll engraving with textured backgrounds, and the stocks are carved with coordinating patterns. The custom case has an “AB” monogram on the lid escutcheons and a green velvet lined interior holding the pistols, a mallet, ladle, Dixon & Sons three-compartment flask, Hawksley oiler, combination nipple wrench/screwdriver, casehardened ball mold, cleaning rod, ramrod, and keys.
CONDITION: Fine with gray patina, areas of mild pitting, and crisp engraving. The stock is very
fine and has crisp carving, a few minor dings and scratches, and a tiny crack at the edge by the
breech on the left. Mechanically excellent. The case and accessories are very good to very fine and have mild storage
wear. B) C. Lepage Percussion Pistol - Serial no. 76, 42 cal., 9 7/8 inch octagon bbl., bright finish, ebonized stock. See “A.”
CONDITION: Fine with gray patina, areas of mild pitting, crisp engraving, and general mild wear. The stock is very fine and has crisp carving and limited minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. Overall, this an attractive pair of classic Continental European dueling pistols.
