LOT 312
Exceptional World War II Mauser Model 98 Bolt Action High
Turret Sniper Rifle with Matching Scope - Serial no. 14329g, 8 mm cal., 24 inch round
bbl., blue finish, laminate stock. Manufactured by Mauser, this rifle has been fitted out with a set of high turret pattern
mounts and an Ajack 4x90 scope. While on paper the High Turret Sniper was rendered obsolete by the easier to make Long Rail and Short
Rail Snipers, the High Turret Sniper was a robust and effective sharpshooting platform that never fully left military service during World War II.
Hooded blade front and tangent rear sights, with the titular “turret” mount on the front receiver ring and the dovetail block on the rear bridge; both are screwed and soldered to the receiver, the former unmarked and the latter bearing the same “eagle/135” inspection mark as the receiver ring. A small “inverted
2” is stamped on top of the receiver tang. Matching numbers are present on the bolt and floorplate, the former having a properly shortened safety and the latter marked “byf ” (Mauser) and “135” along with the trigger guard. A matching number is also present on the front scope ring, with the scope itself numbered “49122”. Smooth pistol grip stock, with unmarked barrel bands, “gqm/44” buttplate, and a brown leather sling. Also included with the lot is a brown leather scope case, which is marked “L.B.A.” and “GEW/No/14329” on the main body to match the rifle. Notes from the consignor indicate that this item was photographed for the book “Karabiner k98, Volume IIa” by Bruce Karem.
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine, with 80% plus original blue finish, showing some mild edge wear, a few areas of brown or gray patina, and light
handling marks. The bolt has taken on a plum tone, with areas of gray. The stock is very fine, with mild scuffs and dents, the deepest of which is
on the left side of the stock near the bolt sleeve; a mended “duffel cut” is hidden by the mid band. The scope is very good, with good optics, a
solid reticule, and a mixed patina on the tube, with a small dent visible on the right side of the body near the elevation adjustment. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 12,000 - 18,000
