 LOT 314
Unique Documented
Chinese Manufactured
Semi-Automatic Pistol with Ornate
Carved Dragon Grips as Pictured and
Described in “Pistols of the Warlords: 1911-
1949” - Serial no. 10293, 7.63 mm Mauser auto cal., 5 3/4
inch round bbl., chrome finish, hardwood grips. Almost
certainly manufactured during the violent “warlord” period
of the Chinese Civil War. Many Chinese produced pistols
of that period were based on existing European designs;
however, this example appears to be a completely domestic
design. This specific pistol has prominent markings either
side of the slide that appear to have been intended to
spell “AUTOMATIC”, but are comprised of random English/
Latin letters. There are also two “&” symbols and the serial
number marked twice. The pistols is a blowback design and
chambered in .7.63 mm Mauser Auto, fitted with a blade front
sight and a small notch rear sight, grasping serrations on both
sides of the slide, and a safety lever that may have functioned at
one time. It is also fitted with a very attractive pair of hardwood
grips that have been expertly relief carved with Chinese dragons
on both panels. The grips appear to have received various finishes,
which may have originally been a multi-colored layered appearance. This specific pistol is pictured and discussed on p. 188-189 of the book “Pistols of the Warlords: 1911-1949” by Ian McCollum.
CONDITION: Fine, retains 60% plus of the period applied chrome finish with the balance having thinned to a mottled brown-grey patina and a few scattered patches of mild pitting. The grips are also fine with a couple hairline cracks, a repair on the right, and retaining much of the mixed finishes with crisp carving. The firing mechanism does not appear functional.
Estimate: 3,000 - 4,500
LOT 315
Chinese Type 54 Tokarev Semi-Automatic
Pistol with Holster and Belt - Serial no. 6541692, 7.62 mm cal., 4 1/2 inch round bbl., blue finish, plastic grips. Manufactured in China in 1959, with fixed sights, three-symbol nomenclature on top of the slide, “66” factory number on the frame, and a set of ribbed grips with star imprints. The grips are properly free
of “CCCP” markings seen on Soviet Union examples, and the pistol has not been retrofitted with a safety.
Matching numbers are present on the frame, slide, barrel and hammer group
(in electric pencil on the latter two), with the magazine numbered “8033”.
The included belt rig consists of an unmarked brown leather flap holster
and a rubberized cloth belt with a brass Soviet Union belt buckle. This pistol
was part of the collection of Toby Jason Chandler (July 31, 1934-May 25th, 2022). Chandler originally graduated from the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, became commissioned as a Lieutenant of Field Artillery, was reassigned as Captain of Military Intelligence, and then began a 22-year distinguished career as a U.S. Secret Service Agent from 1959-1981. At 26 years old, he became the youngest agent assigned to the elite team directly protecting The White House. Between 1959-1965, he was assigned to the personal details of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, President John F. Kennedy, and President Lyndon B. Johnson.
CONDITION: Fine, with 70% of the original blue finish, showing a mixed brown and gray patina on the gripstraps, and a pattern of etching and pitting on the sides of the frame and slide suggestive of some form of fluid splatter. The grips are also fine, with some minor dings. The holster is good, with some tears and holes, and the belt is very good. Mechanically very good.
Provenance: The Toby Jason Chandler Collection.

- Serial no. BINS, 7.63 mm
Mauser auto cal., 6 1/4 inch
part round bbl., blue finish,
hard rubber grips. Almost certainly manufactured during the violence and upheaval of the Chinese Civil War, this pistol, unlike many manufactured in China at the time, does not appear to be
a copy of a European design but rather an original homegrown design. This example bears multiple markings throughout, which are generally comprised of random, crudely stamped English/Latin letters. The pistol is a blowback design and chambered in 7.63 mm Mauser Auto, fitted with a blade front sight, Broomhandle style grasping area on the rear of the slide, exposed serrated hammer, and no apparent safety mechanism. book “Pistols of the Warlords: 1911-
1949” by Ian McCollum.
CONDITION: Fine, retains 30% of
the thinned original blue finish with
the balance mostly a smooth grey

rear sight and extractor are absent.
