 LOT 455
Attractive Gold Plated Savage Model 1907 Semi-Automatic Pistol with Factory Letter and Case - Serial no. 7384B, 380 ACP cal., 4 1/4 inch round bbl., gold finish, hard rubber grips. Manufactured in 1914, only 9,849
Model 1907 pistols were manufactured
chambered in .380 ACP, compared
to nearly 210,000 in .32 ACP. The top
of the slide is marked with the two-
line address, patent date, and caliber
marking, lacking the “9MM” notation.
The “SAVAGE” trademark is marked on
the left of the frame. Unlike most Savage
pistols with gold plated finish, this
example features no engraving, making
it more rare. It is fitted with a pair of checkered hard rubber grips with Savage logos at the center. The included factor letter lists that the pistol was received from the factory on 19 January 1914 and shipped on 15 February 1916 to H&D Folsom Arms Co. in New York. The letter lists the finish as nickel, which the author of “Savage Pistols” indicates as possibly a factory error or incomplete notation as the pistol does not appear refinished and has nickel plating under the gold plating. Includes a custom hardwood presentation case.
CONDITION: Very fine, retains 75% plus of the possibly period retailer applied gold finish with the balance having thinned to reveal mostly a bright factory documented nickel finish beneath, primarily on
edges and the grip straps. The grips are very fine with a few scattered light handling marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. The modern custom case is very good with some scattered light handling/storage marks. Provenance: The Bailey Brower, Jr. Collection, author of “Savage Pistols”. Estimate: 2,250 - 3,500
LOT 456
Attractive Factory Engraved Savage Model 1907 Semi-
Automatic Pistol with Factory Letter - Serial no. 9033B, 380 ACP cal., 4 1/4 inch round bbl., blue finish, pearl grips. Manufactured in 1915, only 9,849
Model 1907 pistols were manufactured chambered in .380 ACP, compared
to nearly 210,000 in .32 ACP. The top of the slide is marked with the two- line address, patent date, and caliber marking, lacking the “9MM” notation. The pistol features “B” Grade engraving
that consists of flourishes of English style
floral scroll engraving which was likely
executed by Enoch Tue. It is fitted with
blade and notch sights and a pair of “Type B” smooth pearl grips with Savage
medallions. The included factory letter lists the pistol as received from the factory on 2 January 1915, and shipped on 16 June 1916 to W.T. MacArthur.
The letter goes on to state other entries in the ledger related to the pistol including work order 965-1, which indicates work done to the pistol
before shipment and a repair order #10730 dated 2 December 1918. The letter states that even though the engraving isn’t specifically noted in the ledger, the notations that are present makes it a likely candidate
for factory engraving.
CONDITION: Fine, retains 40% plus of the original blue
finish with the balance having thinned to either a smooth grey or smooth brown patina and a
few scattered patches of light pitting, with the majority of the engraving crisp. The grips are also fine with a repaired crack and a couple minor chips in the left panel and otherwise minimal handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
Provenance: The Bailey Brower, Jr. Collection, author of “Savage Pistols”.
Estimate: 3,000 - 4,500
