Factory Engraved Savage/A. H. Fox 20 Gauge XE Grade Double Barrel Shotgun with Additional
16 Gauge Barrel Set - Serial no. 201757, 20 gauge, 28 inch solid rib bbl.,
blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Manufactured by Savage after acquiring
A. H. Fox in 1929. Blued steel barrels with dual white bead sights on the matted solid rib, “CHROMOX
FLUID COMPRESSED STEEL” and “SAVAGE ARMS CORP., UTICA. N.Y.,
U.S.A.” marked on the right and left barrels respectively, attractive wedges
of scrollwork engraved at either breech, and chambers measured 2 3/4 inches
with automatic ejectors. The casehardened boxlock action displays beautifully executed leafy vine engraving surrounding
“ANSLEY H. FOX” and a pair of game birds in ovals on either side and a fox standing in a field scene on the underside. The engraving extends to the tangs, toplever, and trigger guard which has a blank inscription shield. The gun features double triggers and a tang mounted automatic safety switch. Attractively figured, multi-point
checkered, splinter forend with ebony tip insert and engraved fittings, including the Deeley style release and pistol grip stock with factory hard rubber grip cap and a Jostam red rubber recoil pad. Included is a second set of numbered and marked to match, engraved 16 gauge 28 inch solid rib barrels with 2 3/4 inch chambers. Barrel
measurements for the 20 gauge set (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech .623/.623 inches; choke constriction .009/.019 inches; minimum wall thickness .024/.022 inches Barrel and stock measurements for the 16 gauge (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech .661/.662 inches; choke constriction .009/.016 inches;
minimum wall thickness .020/.016 inches; 1 5/8 inch drop at comb; 2 7/8 inch drop at heel; 14 3/8 inch length of pull; weight 6 lbs. 6 oz.
CONDITION: Very fine overall, retaining 95% plus refurbished blue finish with the majority of the loss on the trigger guard which also shows some light oxidation, 50% original case colors with the balance an attractive silver patina, minor handling evidence, a few dings and scratches in the wood, and mostly sharp checkering on the stock and forend. The extra barrel set retains 99% of its original finish. Mechanically excellent.
