Factory Engraved Remington-Hepburn No. 3 Single Shot Sporting Rifle with Double Set Triggers - Serial no. 5948, 38-40 WCF cal., 32 1/4 inch part octagon bbl., blue/ casehardened finish, fancy checkered walnut pistol grip stock. These rifles were manufactured c. 1883-1907. This example has an “E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N.Y.” address on the barrel, indicating it was manufactured c. 1883-1888 before the company was reorganized as Remington Arms Co. Features fine floral scroll and border engraving on the action and trigger guard, and double set triggers. The barrel is equipped with a windage adjustable globe front sight with spirit level, and a tang mounted adjustable peep ladder rear sight. Two filled in and filed rear sight screw
holes visible on top of the barrel. The caliber designation “38 2 1/4” (.38-40 WCF) marked on the bottom of the barrel ahead of the forearm. “HEPBURNS
PAT./OCT. 7TH 1879.” marked on the left of the frame. Matching serial number “5948” marked on the underside of the barrel, rear surface of the forearm, and lower tang.
Mounted with a checkered walnut forend with hard rubber forend cap and nicely figured round knob checkered pistol grip stock with hard rubber buttplate. CONDITION: Fine, the barrel exhibits a smooth gray patina and some scattered areas of light pitting on the exposed surfaces of the barrel with most of the blue finish visible in the protected area underneath the forend. Half of the muted case colors visible, and crisp engraving. Most of the niter blue finish is visible on the sights. Wood is very fine with defined edges, some light handling marks, and crisp checkering. Mechanically fine. Estimate: 5,000 - 8,000

Stevens Ideal No. 50 Single Shot Schuetzen Rifle with Desirable
Schoyen Denver Marked Barrel - Serial no. 4594, 25 CF cal., 28 inch octagon bbl., bright/casehardened finish, highly figured walnut stock. “GEO. C. SCHOYEN DENVER. COLO.” marked on top of the replacement barrel between the scope mounting blocks indicating the rifle passed through the hands of renowned western gunsmith George C. Schoyen (1845-1916) in his Denver shop. The barrel is fitted with a globe front
sight with spirit level, and scope target blocks. There is no provision for a rear sight on the barrel, and a mid-range adjustable Vernier peep sight is fitted to the upper tang. No caliber markings visible on the barrel. The Stevens frame is marked “50” on the front flat (requires removal of the forend for viewing). Fitted with a deluxe walnut Schnabel forend and pistol grip schuetzen buttstock with a high comb, cheek rest, and casehardened Swiss buttplate. Includes false muzzle. CONDITION: Fine as rebarreled by Schoyen, with scattered light freckling on the barrel, and 80% plus vivid original case colors on the frame, and 85% original blue finish on the tang peep sight, and patterns of case colors visible on the buttplate with scattered moderate freckling. Wood is also fine with defined edges, a repaired crack in the left of the wrist, and numerous surface cracks on the left of the buttstock that remains otherwise sound. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 3,500 - 5,500
LOT 73 Very Fine Remington-Hepburn No. 3 Single Shot Sporting Rifle in Desirable .45-70 Caliber - Serial no. 5224, 45-70 Government cal., 32 1/8 inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, checkered pistol grip walnut stock. These rifles were manufactured c. 1883-1907. This example has an “E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N.Y.” address on the barrel, indicating it was manufactured c. 1883-1888 before the company was reorganized as Remington Arms Co. The barrel is equipped with a windage adjustable globe front sight and elevator notch rear sight, with a tang mounted adjustable peep ladder rear sight. The caliber designation “38 2 1/4” (.38-40 WCF) marked on the bottom of the barrel ahead of the forearm. “HEPBURNS PAT./OCT. 7TH 1879.” marked on the left of the frame. Matching serial number “5224” marked on the underside of the barrel, rear surface of the forearm, lower tang, front surface of the buttstock and underside of the buttplate. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm with nickel forend cap and round knob checkered pistol grip stock with casehardened buttplate. CONDITION: Very fine, retains 85% original blue finish on the barrel, 50% plus vivid original case colors with smooth gray patina on the balance and some scattered patches of very light pitting, 75% plus bright niter blue finish on the small parts, and sharp edges and markings in the metal. Wood is excellent with defined edges, some light handling marks, and a few small nicks in the otherwise crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 3,000 - 4,500
LOT 74 Marlin Ballard No. 9 Union Hill Single Shot Falling Block Rifle - Serial no. 28090, 38-55 cal., 30 inch part octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. This model was manufactured between 1876 and 1891. The left side of the receiver is marked “MARLIN FIRE ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CT. U.S.A./ BALLARD’S. PATENT. NOV. 5, 1861.” The top of the barrel at the breech is marked “38-55.” Matching serial numbers are marked on the bottom of the barrel, tail of the forearm, bottom of the receiver, inside of the buttplate, and front of the stock wrist. It features a globe and pin front sight dovetailed to the barrel, plain trigger, and a factory Ballard mid-range tang sight. It is mounted with a checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with a cheekpiece and nickel plated Swiss style buttplate. CONDITION: Fine with 60% original nickel on the buttplate, 50% original blue finish mixed with brown patina on the barrel, strong patterns original case colors on the sides of the breechblock, patches of original case colors visible on the otherwise silver-gray frame, minor surface oxidation, mild edge wear, light scratches, mild wear in the otherwise crisp checkering, some hairline cracks in the otherwise very good wood, small chips at the nose of the forearm, and a few dings marks throughout. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 1,800 - 2,750
