Very Scarce Late World War II German Walther “45 ac” Code VG-1 Volksgewehr “Last Ditch”
Bolt Action Rifle with Sling - Serial no. 5266, 7.92 mm Mauser cal., 20 1/2 inch round bbl., blue/phosphate finish,
hardwood stock. One of the final weapons designed and developed by the Germans as an effort late in World War II, the VG-1 was one
of the “People’s Weapons”, last ditch small arms produced by an industrial complex surrounded on all sides while being destroyed by Allied
strategic bombers. In essence, the VG-1 is a successor of the Mauser K98k, stripped to the bone with as many simplified or repurposed parts as possible in the name of getting a working rifle out the
door ASAP. Relatively few made it to the States due to the variety of “prettier” weapons to be had by trophy hunters and the relative abundance of K98ks to be had by GIs, making them rather scarce stateside on
the modern market. The heart of the rifle is a receiver assembly fabricated from milled bar steel, fitted with a cast and machined bolt, a machine gun barrel, fixed sights, is configured to accept a G/K 43 magazine and is
currently accompanied with a “gcb” code “K43” marked magazine. The only marking on the barrel is an eagle proof, the receiver is marked “VG1 45 ac 5266” and the matching number “66” is marked on the bolt handle. The stock is single piece construction with a flat steel buttplate. Includes a period tan canvas sling with blue ink markings “MP44 u VLKG45” and “qlg/45”.
CONDITION: Very fine, retains 70% original phosphate finish on the barrel and bolt with scattered moderate freckling and smooth brown patina on the balance, and 75% original blue finish on the receiver with one patch of mild corrosion on the left below the markings, and sharp markings in the metal overall. Magazine retains 85% original black painted finish. Stock is also very fine with scattered light scratches and dents, a cracked sliver in the front inside edge of the forend, a moderate crack visible beneath the breech area, a mild crack on top directly behind the left of the receiver (stock remains sound), and defined edges overall. Mechanically fine.
Occupation of Czechoslovakia for issue to the German Gebirgsjaeger mountain troopers. Examples such as this one are considered to be
the rarest of the G33/40s, with the exception of the folding stock prototype rifle, in that it has no evidence of serial numbers in the usual places, and these
are believed to have been assembled sometime around late 1945 from leftover parts. “945” code above “1941” date on top of the receiver. The “N8” and “(eagle)/63 proof on the bolt. Hooded blade front and tangent rear sights, with “(eagle)/WaA63” and “(eagle)/607” proofs on various components, and an “(eagle)/(swastika)/WaA63” stamp on the underside of the buttstock. Includes leather sling.
CONDITION: Excellent plus, retains 98% plus original blue finish with a few light handling marks. Stock is also excellent with sharp defined edges, a few light handling marks, and a crisp stamp. Mechanically excellent.
Estimate: 4,500 - 6,500
Mauser cal., 23 1/2 inch round bbl., blue finish, laminate stock. Manufactured by J.P. Sauer & Sohn, this 1939 dated K98k
rifle was subsequently arsenal outfitted in the “short rail” sniper configuration, with the 2 1/2 inch long mounting rail secured to the receiver side
wall with three screws and remarked with matching serial number “1632” to the rifle. The rifle is fitted with a blade front sight and a tangent rear sight, with the receiver ring manufacturer code marked “147” above a “1939” date. Small eagle proofs stamped on various components. The short side rail is mounted with a non-manufacturer marked scope numbered “37158” on the left of the dial base and bearing a “43” date on the bottom of the tube, with the refinished scope base marked
with an “HWZ” monogram and numbered “1146”. Minus the arsenal replacement bolt non-matching numbered “8631”, the remaining visible
serial numbered parts on the rifle are matching numbered. Fitted with a smooth pistol grip stock, which has a matching serial number to the rifle
stamped in the bottom of the butt along with Waffenamt stamps, with a smooth steel buttplate. Includes period brown leather sling.
CONDITION: Fine, retains 70% arsenal refurbished blue finish with a few patches of light pitting and smooth brown patina on the balance, and
defined markings in the metal. Stock is also fine with defined edges overall, scattered scratches, and crisp stampings. Mechanically excellent. Scope
mount base is refinished, remarked. Scope is very fine, retains 85% original blue finish with some areas of scattered brown spotting and light
freckling, and the optics are hazy with a crisp reticle.
