According to Volcanic Firearms Predecessor to the Winchester Rifle by authors Edmund Lewis and Stephen Rutter, knowledgeable collectors estimate that fewer than one hundred New Haven Volcanic Carbines with 21 inch barrels were produced.
Exceptional Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic Lever Action Carbine in Desirable 21 Inch Barrel Length - Serial no. 83, 41 Volcanic cal., 21 inch bbl., blue/silver-plated finish, varnished walnut stock. This Volcanic Carbine was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. circa 1857. This Deluxe Carbine has a factory engraved, silver-plated, brass receiver and buttplate. The open, scroll engraving has panels with scalloped borders and is typical of the factory engraving found on New Haven Arms Volcanic rifles, carbines and pistols. The carbine has a 21 inch blued octagon barrel with integral magazine. The barrel has a nickel silver front sight blade similar to the type used on Henry rifles. A screw adjustable, dovetail mounted, rear sight is located on the carbine receiver. The hammer and trigger are casehardened and the lever and cartridge elevator have a fire blue finish. The straight grain walnut stock has a high polish piano finish. The top of the barrel is stamped with the legend “NEWHAVEN CONN. PATENT FEB 14.1854” in one-line. The modified barrel legend was utilized on Volcanic firearms manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. after Oliver Winchester re-organized the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. in April 1857. The serial number “83” is stamped on the left side of the lower receiver tang, on the inside of the buttplate, the top of the stock beneath the buttplate and on the shanks of one of the buttplate and one of the tang screws. All of the visible serial numbers match. All of the hand-fitted tang and buttplate screws are original to the carbine. Volcanic rifles, carbines and pistols are scarce and historically significant firearms. Volcanic firearms introduced the combination of self- contained, integrally primed cartridge, spring loaded magazine and self-cocking lever action which paved the way for

the successful Henry and Winchester rifles.
