The barrel has “36 CAL” marked on the muzzle, a dovetailed brass blade front sight, “ROY VAIL” maker’s mark inlay, and a dovetailed V-notch rear sight. The lock has scroll engraving and “Roy Vail” signed below the pan. The rifle has adjustable double set triggers. The furniture is engraved silver. The four-piece patchbox has a detailed scene of a Native American shooting
a pronghorn. The cheekpiece has a fantastically detailed running buck, and the nicely figure stock has some scroll carving and a large spread wing eagle and shield design on the left side of the buck
with a ruby colored eye and silver pins. CONDITION: Exceptionally fine as custom built, engraved, and stocked by Master Gunsmith and
engraver Roy Vail. 98% of the brown finish remains on the barrel which has very minor edge wear. The silver displays attractive aged patina and has crisp engraving. The lock has some mild pitting and staining but is mostly bright and has crisp engraving. The stock is also very fine and has attractive figure, crisp raised relief carving, and generally only minor handling and storage marks. The rifle currently functions by setting the trigger before cocking. Overall, this is a stunning rifle by one of the most well-respected custom gunmakers of the 20th century. Estimate: 4,500 - 6,500

Extraordinary Relief Carved and Engraved Contemporary Peter Berry Style Golden Age Flintlock American Long Rifle - NSN, 45 cal., 42 inch part octagon bbl., antiqued brown/bright finish, curly maple stock. There were two Peter Berry’s active in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, during the “Golden Age” of American longrifles. Examples can be seen in “Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in Its Golden Age” by Kindig. The elder died in 1795, and the
younger was still active in the early 19th century. This rifle is a contemporary copy, likely based in part on the rifle
on page 274 of Kindig’s book. The rifled, part-octagon, two-stage barrel has light engraving on the muzzle, traditional blade and notch sights,
“PB” inscribed on top, and a “*” marked on the upper left at the breech. The patchbox has a rubbed of inscription that includes the has “Town Mayor’ in
the upper line. The sideplate is marked “1802.” The stock has detailed molding and relief carving. The cheekpiece has a brass man-in-the-moon inlay and attractive
incised and relief scroll carving and a checkered panel. The patchbox does not have a release button. CONDITION: Fine overall with an attractive antiqued brown and mild pitting on the lock and barrel, mild aged patina on the brass, and general mild wear. The stock is also fine and has some cracks at the breech, additional faint hairline cracks, crisp carving, and generally minor wear. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 3,000 - 5,000

This stunning custom built Kentucky rifle was built by legendary gunsmith Roy Vail of Warwick, New York who produced incredible firearms for many famous Americans after World War II, including Dwight D.
Eisenhower. Vail was also experienced with muzzle-loaders and restored a pair of

Elaborate Engraved, Silver Inlaid and Relief Carved W. Deaderick and D. Davison Contemporary Flintlock American Long Rifle - NSN, 45 cal., 42 1/8 inch octagon bbl., brown/brass/silver finish, curly maple stock. The barrel has dovetailed
blade and notch sights flanked by engraving and an inlaid signature panel signed “W. Deaderick - D. Davison.” Donald Davison is a gunmaker from Washington County, Tennessee, who was trained by Lester Smith of the “Johnson City School” in Tennessee. W. Deaderick may be the late William F.
Deaderick Jr. of Jefferson City, Tennessee. The rifle is equipped with single phase double set triggers. The lock and furniture also feature extensive engraving. The rifle has eight silver inlays along the forend, the silver inlays on the tear drop flats, a silver man in the moon inlay on the cheekpiece, and a silver vent pick
holder under the cheekpiece. The incredibly figured curly maple stock has raised relief carving.

bbl., brown/bright finish, curly maple stock. Donald Davison is a gunmaker from Washington County, Tennessee, who was trained by Lester Smith of the “Johnson City School” in Tennessee, and this rifle is a clear continuation of that region’s style. The barrel has dovetailed blade and notch sights flanked by engraving, “D. Davison” signed on an inlaid inscription panel, and “45 CAL” on top at the breech. The lock and the German-silver
furniture are also engraved. The rifle is equipped with single phase double set triggers. The incredibly figured curly maple stock has raised relief carving. CONDITION: Very fine with 85% of the original brown finish remaining, some fading, light aged patina on the furniture, and general minor overall wear.
