Highly Ornate Spanish Attributed High Renaissance Style Cast Iron Parade Type Shield - Similar in style to the decorative “parade shields” of the High Renaissance period, this example was likely made during the mid-19th century, during a time of revival and extreme fascination with the Classical and Renaissance periods. This example measures approximately 23 inches in diameter and has been very ornately cast from iron with silvered accents throughout. The outer edge of the shield has the appearance of being rolled and roped with a border of feathers and ribbons inside that. The raised dome of the shield has winged feminine figures, bestial faces, stands of arms, and four mounted soldier/combat scenes, all surrounded with acanthus scroll filler. The boss at the center features a border of olives and olive leaves, a zig-zag border, and at the center a gilt accented heraldic shield with a rampant lion on the left and bends on the right, surmounted by a viscounts style coronet, and flanked by feminine figures. A somewhat similar coat of arms is listed as being associated with the Hermosilla surname (The consignor attributes these arms to the family of the Viscount Hermosilla). The back features a pair of fairly solid (possibly iron) leather wrapped enarmes and there are four small holes through the shield that were likely for a sling. Includes a cast iron stand for displaying the shield.
CONDITION: Very fine, most of the iron surfaces showing an attractive brown patina and retaining much of the silver and gold accents, with all of the casting remaining crisp. There is a small spot of separation of the “rolled” edge near the right bottom, but otherwise minimal handling evidence. There is some visible glue on the back side around the enarmes. Overall a very attractive display piece! Estimate: 9,000 - 13,000
