LOT 3273 Pair of Large Bore Irish Trulock Flintlock Traveling or Coat Pistols -A) Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 76 cal., 4 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This set of large bore traveling or coat pistols was manufactured by a gunsmith by the name of Trulock. A. Merwyn Carey recorded a W. Trulock from Dublin in English, Irish, and Scottish Firearms Makers (p. 97-98) and notes that he was a general gunsmith active under his own name from 1770-1810 and then the business continued under Trulock & Sons to 1861. A Thomas Trulock, also of Dublin though apparently unrelated, is on record as a gunsmith and died in 1798. A “Truelock” gunsmith is mentioned in The Punster’s Pocketbook by Jonathan Swift, Dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin and in James Joyce’s Ulysses in Episode 15 demonstrating that they were well known even after their time. The top of the barrels are marked “-DUBLIN-” followed by “DU-2747” on gun A and “DU-2746” on gun B. These secondary markings have been added at a later time. The lock plates have light engraving behind the pans and at the rear and are marked “TRULOCK” with the “K” not as visible on gun A. Additional features include post front and rear notch sights, swivel mounted ramrods, sliding cock locks/safeties, German silver initial plates on the upper wrists, lightly engraved brass trigger guards, and German silver buttplates. The pistols are mounted with walnut stocks with checkered grips. CONDITION: Good. The pistol has an gray aged patina on the barrel and a dark gray patina on the lock plate, ramrod, and ramrod swivel.
