  LOT 3302 Attractive Mid/Late-18th Century Scottish Basket Hilt Backsword with Sheath - Manufactured in the mid-late 1700s, this backsword is typical of those favored
by Scottish highland regiments and some heavy cavalry units of the period. The blade measures 31 3/8 inches with one full edge and a short false edge near the tip. It has three prominent fullers on each
side of the blade running for various lengths. It measures approximately 38 inches overall. The hilt is of the fairly typical
“Glasgow type” with inner and outer shield pierced with heart variations and small circles, looped forward guard, and pierced heart shaped side guards flanked by ram’s horns. The most
defining feature of the guard is a broad, rolled wrist guard. The pommel is a fluted low dome with visibly peened tang. The grip is of copper wrapped worn shagreen, and there is a leather hand guard inside the basket. Includes a modern leather sheath with brass fittings.
CONDITION: Good, the blade mostly a bright grey patina with some mild pitting scattered throughout and some mild edge erosion from sharpening. The guard shows a mottled grey brown patina and some scattered light pitting. The replacement grip shows moderate wear and is crudely wrapped. The replacement sheath is
very fine with some scattered minor handling marks. Estimate: 1,800 - 2,750

Mid/Late-18th Century Scottish Basket Hilt Backsword - Manufactured in the mid-late 1700s, this backsword is typical of those favored by Scottish highlanders of the period, including the Highland
regiments of the British army. The blade measures 29 3/4 inches with one full edge and a short false edge near the tip. It has a single deep fuller just below the spine. It measures approximately 36 inches overall. The hilt is of the fairly simple and typical “Glasgow type”, with inner and outer shields pierced with triangle variations and small circles, looped forward guard, and pierced simple side guards. It has a narrow rolled wrist guard. The pommel is a tall cone with visibly peened tang. The grip
is leather and brass wire wrapped. CONDITION: Good, the blade mostly a grey patina with mild pitting throughout and some mild edge/point erosion. The guard is also fine showing grey patina and some light pitting.
The grip is very good with moderate wear and some minor flaking of the leather. Estimate: 1,800 - 2,750

Desirable Early/Mid-18th Century Scottish Basket Hilt Broadsword with Maker’s Marks - Manufactured in the early-mid 1700s, this sword is potentially a composition of a German- made blade and a domestically produced Scottish/British produced hilt. The right of the blade is marked “xx IN x SOLINGEN xx” in both fullers, while the left is marked “xx CLEMENS x BRACH xx” in a similar fashion. There is a small unidentified
trademark stamp on each ricasso. A Clemens “Broch” is listed as a bladesmith in Solingen, active from 1712- 1772, and another blade attributed as made by him is housed in the Royal Armouries collections (IX.1119). The guard is of a late-17th to early 18th-century pattern and has an “M” or “W” maker’s marked basket with fairly large rectangular shields with chevron-shaped inlets, small bows lightly engraved like scallop shells, and a low cone pommel with hand-filed serrations and a visibly peened tang. The grip is hardwood and rewrapped with waxed sinew. It measures approximately 38 inches overall with a 32 inch blade. CONDITION: Good, the blade a mixture of bright and dark grey patina with some mild pitting scattered throughout, some causing some slight edge deformation, and mostly clear markings throughout. The basket shows mostly a bright grey patina with similar mild pitting, an absent bar from the outer shield and some moderate oxidation through the shields. The grip is fair as spit through and having moderate wear. Estimate: 1,600 - 2,500
LOT 3305 Early/Mid-18th Century Scottish Basket Hilt Backsword - Manufactured in the early-mid 1700s, this backsword is typical of those favored by Scottish
highlanders of the period. The blade measures 33 inches with one full edge and a short false edge near the tip. It has two deep fullers just below the spine that, combined, run
most of the length of the blade. It measures approximately 38 1/2 inches overall. The hilt is of the fairly typical “Glasgow type” with inner and outer shields pierced with heart variations and small
circles, looped forward guard, and pierced heart shaped side guards flanked by ram’s horns. It has a wide rolled wrist guard. The pommel is a low dome with hand-filed grooves with visibly peened tang. The grip is grooved wood and wire wrapped.
CONDITION: Good, the blade mostly a bright grey patina with mild pitting, edge/point erosion, and some scattered minor nicks in the edge. The hilt shows a similar patina with some mild pitting, some slight deformation, and a period repair to one of the bars. The grip is also good with moderate wear and chipping.

LOT 3306 Unique Miniature Edward Thurkle London Highland Basket Hilt Broadsword with Scabbard - This interesting miniature basket hilt broadsword is dated 1885 and was manufactured by the Edward Thurkle firm in London. It is likely this downsized sword was used for promotional/advertising purposes. Both sides of the blade are extensively etched with thistle patterns as well as “HP/1885” on the right and “E.THURKLE/MAKER/LONDON” on the left. The guard is of the typical “advanced” 1828 Highland Pattern pierced with mostly hearts, red cloth hand guard inside the basket, and the pommel is a fluted dome with a thistle shaped finial. The grip is wire wrapped shagreen. Includes a nickeled iron scabbard. CONDITION: Fine overall, the blade showing a mix of bright and grey patinas with well-defined etching and most of the nickel finish remaining on the guard. The cloth hand guard and grip are fine with minimal wear. The scabbard is good with some light pitting scattered throughout.
