Scarce Finnish Contract DWM Semi-Automatic Luger with Correctional Institution Marking
- Serial no. 8179P, 7.65 mm Luger Auto cal., 3 3/4 inch round bbl., blue finish, checkered walnut grips.
This is one of approximately 8,000 Lugers sold on contract with Finland in the 1920s. Due to the Treaty
of Versailles, DWM was not allowed to produce guns chambered in military calibers (9mm), so these were
delivered in 7.65mm. Most of these were used by the Finnish Army, although this example does not have the typical “SA” marking, indicating it likely went a different path. The chamber is marked “VANKEINHOITOLAITOS” (correctional institution) over a 5-pointed star flanked by crescents and set on a
radiant burst, with “VANKEINHOITOLAITOS” also marked on
the right of the frame. Fixed sights, “DWM” monogrammed
front toggle, “crown/N” proofs in the appropriate locations,
the full matching serial number located on the front of
the frame and underside of the barrel, partial matching
serial numbers marked in the commercial manner on
various components, a set of replacement checkered grips
renumbered to match on the underside, and nickel plated
magazine with unmarked walnut base. Per consignor the pistol was restored by Gale Morgan.
CONDITION: Very fine, retains 98% professionally refinished blue finish. Replacement grips are also very fine with some light handling marks, one minor chip at the top rear of the left panel, and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
Estimate: 2,750 - 4,250
