Smith & Wesson Model No. 1 Second Issue Revolver with Very Scarce “Stand of Flags” Gutta Percha Case - Serial no. 23356, 22 RF cal., 3 3/16 inch solid rib bbl., blue/silver finish, rosewood grips. A very fine example of a Smith & Wesson Model No. 1 Second Issue
revolver with original and rare “Stand of Flags” Gutta Percha case. The barrel and cylinder
have a blue finish, while the brass frame is plated in silver. It also features a rounded front sight and a rear sight notch cut into the top of the cylinder stop. The seven shot cylinder lacks flutes, and
the top of the octagonal ribbed
barrel features the manufacture
information marked in a single
line. The grip frame, cylinder,
and barrel have matching
assembly numbers, while the
right grip panel is numbered to
the revolver. Includes the very
scarce and highly sought after
“Stand of Flags” Gutta Percha case,
which features a cartridge block for
56 rounds (cartridges not included) and decorative royal purple lining. Only 5,000 Gutta Percha cases are said
to have been made for Smith & Wesson. Most of these were made by Littlefield, Parsons & Co, who also made similar cases for daguerreotypes. These cases were popular during the second half of the 19th Century and were usually used for presentation guns. They were special ordered or added by the distributor after shipment from the factory. These were generally found with the Model No. 1, first and second issue revolvers. The “Stand of Flags” is one of two types of Gutta Percha cases commonly recognized; the other showcases a relief image of a Model No. 1 on the lid. Out of these two case styles, the “Stand of Flags” is the rarest.
CONDITION: Very fine. The barrel and cylinder retain 60% of the original blue finish, while the brass frame retains 95% of the original silver plating. The right grip panel has a small chip near the butt, otherwise the grips are fine with some minor handling marks and nearly all of the original finish. The Gutta Percha case is very fine, with the decorative “Stand of Flags” exterior showcasing crisp lines and excellent detail, and the interior lining showing typical high spot wear. Mechanically excellent. An attractive example of one of Smith & Wesson’s most classic pocket revolvers with an exceedingly scarce case.
Estimate: 2,000 - 3,000
