Attractive Factory Engraved Early Production E. Remington & Sons Over/
Under Derringer with Desirable Blue
Finish - Serial no. 2184, 41 RF cal., 3 inch solid rib bbl., blue finish, rosewood
grips. Remington’s classic over/under derringers, aka the “Double Derringer” or “Model
95,” are undoubtedly among the most iconic pocket pistols of the American West. The design was patented by William H. Elliot on December 12, 1865, with this variation being
manufactured from 1870 to 1888. This early second style variation is marked with the two-line “E.
REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, N.Y./ELLIOT’S PATENT DECEMBER 12TH 1865” marking on the rib and an ejector fitted to the left
side. The scroll engraving patterns on the barrel and frame are designs found on a select number of other early Remington
derringers. The serial number is on the bottom of the lower barrel and on the frame under the left grip.
CONDITION: Fine, retains 80% of the original blue finish on the barrels and 20% of the original blue on the frame with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth brown-grey patina, and the engraving crisp overall. The grips are also fine with some scattered light handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: The Greg Lampe Collection; The George S. Lewis Jr. Collection.
Firearms Co. Protector Palm Pistol - Serial no. 4912, 32 XSRF cal., 1 3/4 inch round bbl., blue finish, hard rubber grips. Just under 13,000 of these
palm pistols were manufactured by Chicago Firearms Co. in the 1890s, with only 1,000 in the 3700-5400 serial number range estimated to have
blue finish like this example. The right side is marked “THE PROTECTOR PAT.MCH.6.83.AUG.29.93” in a circle at the center. The removable left side
plate is marked “CHICAGO FIRE ARMS CO. CHICAGO, ILL” in a circle at the center and has a textured border. The matching serial number is marked
on the inside of the frame, on the side plate, and on the cartridge block. It has a checkered hard rubber plunger pad and matching side plate inserts.
CONDITION: Very fine, retains 85% plus of the bright, original blue finish with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth grey patina, primarily on edges. The hard rubber plunger pad and side plate inserts are also very fine with a few scattered light handling marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
182 Provenance: The George S. Lewis Jr. Collection. Estimate: 3,500 - 5,500
