Relief Carved and Silver Inlaid 19th Century Crank Handle Tip-Up Barrel Gallery Air Gun by Josef Rutte of Ceska Lipa, Czechoslovakia - NSN, 7 mm , 25 3/8 inch octagon bbl., bright/silver finish, highly figured walnut stock. Josef Rutte is listed as an active maker between circa 1820-1850 out of Ceska Lipa, Czechoslovakia. “RUTTE IN BOH.. LEIPPA” silver inlaid on the top of the barrel. Air guns of this style were used primarily for indoor target shooting. “Wind guns” had several advantages over conventional firearms including that they were quieter, smokeless, quicker to reload, and they also required less cleaning since they did not require corrosive black powder. This gallery air gun has a tip-up octagon barrel that loads from the breech, chambered in approximately .28 caliber/7 mm with a smooth bore, dovetail mounted blade front sight and folding notch rear sight, and is mounted with a hardwood forend and buttstock with a checkered wrist, wire inlays on the left and a high quality relief carved dragon head on bottom. It functions through the use of a crank handle (not included) that is inserted in the right side for cocking in order to fill the cylinder reservoir with air, and upon pulling the trigger the spring loaded piston releases. CONDITION: Very good, with some scattered very light pitting on the bright iron surfaces, nearly all of the silver inlay, 30% original silver finish with a tarnished appearance and attractive bright golden patina on the balance of the brass. The wood is also very good with some scattered handling marks, a few cracks and repairs visible, and distinct checkering and carving. Mechanically untested, and the latch for the tip-up barrel is partially absent/broken off. Provenance: The Dr. Robert D. Beeman Collection. Estimate: 1,800 - 2,750 LOT 1286 Cased Air Gun Cane Set by Henry Tatham of London - NSN, 30 , 20 inch round bbl., yellow finish, horn grips. This “air cane” measures 37 1/2 inches in overall length, is painted what appears to be a honey yellow and was likely originally painted to give it the appearance of bamboo, with small blade and notch sights and the ability to switch between calibers by utilizing a removable brass multi-groove rifled .30 caliber screw-in sleeve insert, and has a brass smoothbore .39 caliber outer section. The screw-in brass tipped ferrule doubles as a ramming rod for loading. The grip handle is horn. Functions by unscrewing the lower barrel section from the top section and screwing the included air pump in its place to fill the tank in a similar fashion to using a modern day bicycle tire pump. Once filled, the lower barrel section can be screwed back together with the top section and loaded from the muzzle end with a ball and patch. To cock, the included square-tipped key is inserted into the hole two inches down from the joining section and turned. When the trigger button, located near the key hole, is pushed, the air from the tank inside the top section is released into the barrel. Includes a walnut case, air pump, bullet mold, lead balls and tools. CONDITION: Fine overall, retains 75% of the painted lacquer finish with scattered chips. The horn grip handle has some mild chips and few cracks. The case is also very good with general age related wear, some scratches, separated sections inside, an absent plaque on the lid and absent keyhole plate. Provenance: The Dr. Robert D. Beeman Collection.
