Unique Documented Winchester Model 1894/95 Factory Hybrid Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine - Serial no. 1014894, 30 WCF cal., 21 1/2 inch
round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1928 with Winchester factory oval proofs on the barrel and receiver at the breech. This factory hybrid
Model 1894 is often referred to as the Winchester Model 1894/95 saddle ring carbine by collectors. As explained in “The Winchester Model 94: The First 100 Years” by Robert
Renneberg (see p. 52-53 and 60-61), these extremely rare Model 1894 carbine variations were factory built with surplus Model 1895 .30-03/.30-06 NRA musket barrels cut down
from the original 24 inch length to 21 1/2 inches, rechambered to .30 W.C.F., and fitted on a Model 1894 carbine receiver. These carbines first appeared in 1927 after the NRA musket was discontinued in 1926.
Renneberg accounted for“at least three carbines with 21 1/2 inch barrels [which] were definitely factory produced and are in existence.”The left side of the barrel has the standard two line“MODEL 94”, trademark,
nickel steel, and caliber marking, while the right has the two-line Winchester address. The upper tang has the three-line model and trademark information, and the serial number is on the bottom of the receiver. The barrel is
fitted with a pinned German silver blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight, and one of the original Model 1895 rear sight mounting holes has a visible filler screw near the breech. The standard carbine length magazine
is retained to the barrel with a dovetailed band. The left of the receiver is fitted with a saddle ring. Mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a carbine buttplate. Includes copies of an article by Rick Hill from the Summer 2012 edition of “The Winchester Collector describing the different variations of these rare hybrid carbines, and contains a list of 50 known examples including this carbine which is listed by serial number.
CONDITION: Fine, retains 50% plus of the original blue finish with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth grey patina with a few scattered patches of light pitting. The wood is also fine with a few scattered minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. A very rare variation of the Model 1894 saddle ring carbine, not found in some of the most extensive Winchester collections!
