Unmarked 12-Shot Percussion Horizontal Turret Rifle -
NSN, 54 cal., 28 1/4 inch round bbl., unknown finish, walnut stock. This unmarked rifle utilizes a horizontally
oriented 12-shot turret and is fired using a double action bar hammer style action that rotates the turret as the
trigger is pulled allowing for rapid fire. It likely dates to the 1830-1840s. The rifled barrel ha a tiny brass blade front sight
and a rear sight with two folding leaves is fitted on top of the action at the rear. The rifle features a full-length
forend, ramrod, and smooth buttstock with a brass buttplate. This is a very innovative design produced by an unknown gunsmith.
CONDITION: Good. The metal throughout has a dark gray-brown patina, some patches of mild oxidation/light pitting, and general mild overall wear. The wood is very good and has scattered scratches, dings, and scuffs; a few small chips, and general mild overall wear. The action is functional but appears to need some work to get the proper hammer fall and timing. Provenance: The Mark Aziz Collection; Property of a Gentleman.
Estimate: 6,500 - 9,500

Scarce C.B. Allen Cochran Patent Underhammer
Percussion Turret Rifle - Serial no. 171, 42 cal., 29 3/4 inch octagon bbl., blue
finish, walnut stock. This rifle is an interesting example of the third type of Cochran turret
rifles manufactured by Cyrus B. Allen in Springfield, Massachusetts, in the mid to late 1830s. Flayderman’s Guide lists around 50 of these rifles in the approximately 155-200 range. These third
types are most readily recognizable by the lack of a trigger guard and
a hammer that engages the trigger at the front. This example has a different
hammer design than the illustrated example and others we have seen. It has a loop
on the bottom of the hammer. The rifled barrel has a dovetailed German silver blade front
   124
sight and dovetailed sporting notch rear sight. The hinged top strap is marked “COCHRANS/MANY/
CHAMBERED/PATENT/RIFLE” and “C.B. ALLEN/SPRINGFIELD/MASS.” in two blocks. The turret, frame, top strap, and standing breech all have the matching serial number. The furniture is German silver.
CONDITION: Good with a dark brown patina on the iron overall, some mild pitting, and general mild overall wear. The German silver furniture has attractive aged patina. The stock is also good and has a dark finish, general scratches and dings, a thin crack at the top of the wrist, minor flakes at the toe, and minor overall wear. The turret stop isn’t properly engaging. The trigger requires manual assistance when cocking, otherwise the hammer and trigger mechanism function mechanically fine.
