Very Scarce Engraved Remington Model 1875 Single Action Army Revolver - Serial no. 25, 44-40 WCF cal., 7 1/2
inch round bbl., nickel finish, antique ivory grips. The Remington Model 1875 Army revolver, also known at the “Frontier Army” and
“Improved Army,” was one of the main competitors in the large frame revolver market in the late 19th century and competed against
the famous Colt Single Action Army and Smith & Wesson’s top break revolvers. Only an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 of these iconic revolvers were manufactured c. 1875-1889, and very few of them are found with high level engraving. This is the later production version in the popular .44-40
W.C.F. frontier cartridge. It has the low batch serial number “25” on the loading gate arm, trigger guard, and left side of the grip frame at the toe. It features beautiful scroll engraving with beaded backgrounds, wavy line and accents, entwining lines around the standard barrel marking and on the back strap, the crosshatch and dot pattern behind the hammer, a lanyard ring on the butt, and “Nimschke stars” by the ejector on the frame and on the trigger guard bow. Legendary 19th century master engraver Louis D. Nimschke is known to have engraved for Remington as a private contractor, and the engraving on this revolver closely matches his style, and many similar patterns can be found throughout his pattern book reproduced in “L.D. Nimschke: Firearms Engraver” by R.L. Wilson. A “0541” marked copper inventory tag accompanies the revolver.
CONDITION: Very fine with crisp engraving and markings, 80% plus original nickel plating remaining, scattered mild pitting mainly on the left side of the barrel and under the grips, smoky case colors remaining on the hammer, and general mild age and storage related wear. The slightly age shrunken grips are fine and have several thin age cracks, attractive natural grain, and a mellow aged patina. Mechanically excellent.
Provenance: The Elliott Burka Collection; Property of a Gentleman.
Estimate: 9,500 - 16,000
